Posted: Published on February 28th, 2014

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) February 28, 2014 The American Med Spa Association (AmSpa) in partnership with Institute for Laser Medicine (ILM), announce that they are launching an extensive laser training program designed to offer a flexible approach to classroom instruction and hands-on training on real clients. This two week program, taught by ILMs Rebecca Weston, compliments the aesthetic courses and two-day laser program being offered through AmSpa by True U Esthetics and True U Laser, another AmSpa partner. According to ILM's Instructor Rebecca Weston, attendees will graduate with industry level competencies, conversational fluencies and a deep understanding of the equipment being used throughout the industry. During clinic training, attendees will run a schedule similar to the one of a Laser Technician to get an understanding of how to juggle their daily routine. This wide-ranging laser program is another benefit that we are providing to our AmSpa members at discounted rates, said Alex Thiersch, Founder and Director of AmSpa. Our members now have access to an extended laser training class as well as another location where they can attend. For those unable to attend the first week of classroom theory in-person, they will be able to attend via online video (webinars). We … Continue reading

Dad believes med spa victim's spirit appears during interview

Posted: Published on February 21st, 2014

SAVANNAH, GA (CBS ATLANTA) - For seven months, CBS Atlanta News has been investigating the deaths of two women at a metro Atlanta med spa. The family of one of the victims shared their heartbreaking story. Lonely, best describes Hal Jenkins these days. He often thinks about his daughter April Jenkins and how she'll never again walk through the front door of the Savannah home he built for her. "I would never let a day go by that I didn't come over here. And I'd look the house over to make sure everything was all right and I'd sit down and think about her. I come in and the house is quiet, and it's just me. And I'm thinking she would probably come out one of the rooms after a while, but she never does," Hal Jenkins said. April Jenkins died on February 19, 2013, during liposuction performed by Kennesaw doctor Nedra Dodds. CBS Atlanta traveled to Savannah to talk to Hal Jenkins and April's sister Audrey Jenkins about their malpractice lawsuit against Dodds. During our conversation, something unusual happened. The doorbell rang, but no one was at the door. Hal Jenkins was convinced it was April's spirit. "God does … Continue reading

Victim's family speaks out one year after cosmetic surgery death

Posted: Published on February 20th, 2014

SAVANNAH, GA (CBS ATLANTA) - One year ago this week, April Jenkins died after having cosmetic surgery at a metro Atlanta med spa. For the first time, Jenkins' father, Hal Jenkins, is talking about that tragic day and wondering why the Georgia Medical Board hasn't taken action against the doctor. "She was the love of our life, she was everything to us," Hal Jenkins said. "It's just very hurtful to even talk about her because I miss her so much." April Jenkins died last February while undergoing liposuction performed by Dr. Nedra Dodds at Opulence Aesthetic Medicine in Kennesaw. "She didn't take care of my sister and that hurts me to this day," April Jenkins' sister, Audrey Jenkins, said. Employees in the operating room during the procedure said April Jenkins complained that it was "tearing and burning." They also told police a rag was placed in April Jenkins' mouth to quiet her. The medical examiner found a perforation in April Jenkins' diaphragm as well as multiple puncture wounds to her liver. "Someone that's supposed to be professional and they let something like this happen to her. I can't understand it," Hal Jenkins said. Even though it's been a year since … Continue reading

Sports Medicine Experts Say Female Athlete Triad Syndrome a Growing Concern

Posted: Published on February 18th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise When an adolescent female patient comes to Nationwide Childrens Hospitals Sports Medicine clinic, not only are these young women treated for their sports-related injury, but their sports medicine physician will also ask if theyve missed any periods, because of a growing concern among female athletes. Anastasia Fischer, MD, a physician in Sports Medicine at Nationwide Childrens, says that is because female athlete triad syndrome is more prevalent than previously realized. The female athlete triad has three interrelated components: disordered eating low energy availability (often caused by not eating appropriately), dysmenorrhea (change in a girl's period), and low bone mineral density. Regan, a high-school track and cross-country athlete from Columbus, Ohio, said she didnt realize how serious the symptoms she was experiencing were until she suffered a stress fracture. The sports medicine team at Nationwide Childrens helped her realize that this injury, and her loss of bone density, was due to the fact that she needed several hundred more calories a day than she realized because of how many she burns as a busy high school athlete. Many girls are so active they need 3,500 calories a day because they are competing at … Continue reading

Rathnawali Principal H A H Jayawardane had this to say: "We have achieved most of the expected educational goals so far. We worked hard to achieve them. It is basically because of the students' commitment and their talents. On the other hand, teachers guided them perfectly while working hard to develop their skills. One of the important things we did was that we arranged extra hours to cover the syllabi and made students prepare for the exams. Students were quite keen on these extra activities and they followed the given guidelines to achieve better results." During 2010, 2011 and 2012 they have achieved the all island all round best results in Ordinary Level examination which is a record. Cellulite isnt an urgent health risk for anyone, but many people who have it and others who worry about developing it, are intrigued to learn that Dr. Leroy Young, M.D., FACS, is conducting a clinical study right here in Washington on the efficacy of a new drug to reduce the dimpling appearance of this common unwanted skin condition. Dr. Young, who joined Mercy Clinic team of physicians Jan. 1, smiles when people question him about the cellulite study. Its a cosmetic concern, yes, but one that many people would be interested in reducing or eliminating all together, he said. It wasnt hard to find people interested in volunteering to participate, especially since its so close to home. Mercy Health Research-Washington, which opened earlier this year, is located in the space that was once going to be a three-bed hospital for Patients First Health Care, before it merged with Mercy. The facility, which is attached to the east end of the Mercy South building (formerly Patients First) but with a separate entrance, includes four treatment rooms and two labs. Local patients enrolled in clinical studies come here for their doctor visits and treatments, saving the time and expense of driving into … Continue reading

Medical Directors of Medical Spas Beware

Posted: Published on February 1st, 2014

Chicago, Illinois (PRWEB) January 31, 2014 Due to the recent surge in popularity, the medical spa industry is attracting not only dermatologists and plastic surgeons, but also general practitioners, OB/GYNs, and ER physicians across the country who want a piece of this lucrative business. But according to a recent article published by the American Med Spa Association (AmSpa), many physicians dont realize that being employed by a medical spa without actually owning the medical spa, or performing aesthetic treatments without the proper training and experience, is often illegal. And since the physicians are ultimately responsible for what transpires in the medical practice, it is often the physicians, not the med spa employees, who are held responsible. In the article Want to Be a Medical Director at a Med Spa? Beware, AmSpa Associate General Counsel Renee Coover writes that it is crucial for physicians to know the laws and regulations pertaining to medical spas before signing on as medical director to make some fast cash. If they dont, the medical director may be receiving an unfriendly visit from state regulators. According to Coover, physicians acting as medical directors must be mindful of two things: improper ownership and lack of experience. In … Continue reading
