Biological experiments become transparent anywhere, any time – Phys.Org

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2017

February 14, 2017 Biological experiments are generating increasingly large and complex sets of data. This has made it difficult to reproduce experiments at other research laboratories in order to confirm or refute the results. The difficulty lies not only in the complexity of the data, but also in the elaborate computer programmes and systems needed to analyse them. Scientists from the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) of the University of Luxembourg have now developed a new bioinformatics tool that will make the analysis of biological and biomedical experiments more transparent and reproducible. The tool was developed under the direction of Prof. Paul Wilmes, head of the LCSB group Eco-Systems Biology, in close cooperation with the LCSB Bioinformatics Core. A paper describing the tool has been published in the highly ranked open access journal Genome Biology. The new bioinformatics tool, called IMP, is also available to researchers online (r3lab.uni.lu/web/imp/). Biological and biomedical research is being inundated with a flood of data as new studies delve into increasingly complex subjects like the entire microbiome of the gut using faster automated techniques allowing so-called high-throughput experiments. Experiments that not long ago had to be carried out laboriously by hand can now be … Continue reading

European Bioinformatics Institute chooses Red Hat OpenStack – Cloud Pro

Posted: Published on February 8th, 2017

The European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), part ofthe European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), has announced it's using Red Hat's OpenStack Platform to drive forward its collaborative research project, known as the Embassy Cloud. The project's aim is to collaborate with researchers worldwide on life science experiments to find the answers to many worldwide problems, such as pan-cancer analysis. EMBL-EBI needed to find a platform that could scale dramatically to respond to the greater data demands it was experiencing. The organisation was previously using VMwares vCloud, but it needed a more responsive solution and because the EBI has already been using Red Hat Enterprise Linux, it decided to look at other solutions Red Hat offered. "Many global research collaborations would not be possible without the functionality of Embassy Cloud,"Steven Newhouse, head of Technical Services at EMBL-EBI said. "We are now using the Red Hat OpenStack Platform to support these collaborations - it has the flexibility and scalability needed to allow people working on different projects, in different locations, to access the information they need, as and when they need it." As well as being an open standard in the research community, EBI knew Red Hat's OpenStack could deliver the scalable, flexible cloud … Continue reading

European Bioinformatics Institute – Wikipedia

Posted: Published on January 18th, 2017

The European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) is a centre for research and services in bioinformatics, and is part of European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). The roots of the EMBL-EBI lie in the EMBL Nucleotide Sequence Data Library[3][4] (now known as EMBL-Bank), which was established in 1980 at the EMBL laboratories in Heidelberg, Germany and was the world's first nucleotide sequence database.[5] The original goal was to establish a central computer database of DNA sequences, to supplement sequences submitted to journals. What began as a modest task of abstracting information from literature soon became a major database activity with direct electronic submissions of data and the need for highly skilled informatics staff. The task grew in scale with the start of the genome projects, and grew in visibility as the data became relevant to research in the commercial sector. It soon became apparent that the EMBL Nucleotide Sequence Data Library needed better financial security to ensure its long-term viability and to cope with the sheer scale of the task. There was also a need for research and development to provide services, to collaborate with global partners to support the project, and to provide assistance to industry. To this end, in 1992, the … Continue reading
