Using the Power of Computers to Harness the Human Genome May Provide Clues into the Ebola Virus

Posted: Published on December 18th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Ramaswamy Narayanan, Ph.D., professor in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science at Florida Atlantic University, is working to blend the power of computers with biology to use the human genome to remove much of the guesswork involved in discovering cures for diseases. In an article titled Ebola-Associated Genes in the Human Genome: Implications for Novel Targets, published in the current MedCrave Online Journal of Proteomics and Bioinformatics, Narayanan describes how key genes that are present in our cells could be used to develop drugs for this disease. Bioinformatics is a powerful tool to help us understand biological data, said Narayanan whose research has focused in this field for more than a decade. We are mining the human genome for Ebola virus association to develop an understanding of the human proteins involved in this disease for subsequent research and development, and to potentially create a pipeline of targets that we can test and evaluate. Ebola virus disease is a major healthcare challenge facing the globe today and if left unchecked could become a pandemic. A limited knowledgebase exists about the Ebola virus and companies are hastening to develop vaccines and other forms … Continue reading

Procter & Gamble turns to Eagle for bioinformatics software

Posted: Published on December 10th, 2014

Global consumer products giant Procter & Gamble (P&G) has turned to Cambridge bioinformatics technology to accelerate certain areas of research. No figures are being disclosed for the four-year deal secured by Eagle Genomics, the Babraham Research Campus company. P&Gs Global Biotechnology and Life Sciences Department will use Eagles bioinformatics software platform, eaglecore, to help accelerate research of new products, organise existing data and integrate legacy data with more recent data for analysis across the company. The deal will see P&G take a four-year licence for an undisclosed sum, which will include additional data curation services. The agreement follows a long partnership between Eagle and P&G involving Eagles consultancy arm, which has been used to support past research. Dr Abel Ureta-Vidal, CEO of Eagle said: eaglecore is an extremely powerful platform and will have a major impact on P&Gs approach to their current research projects. By using our platform, P&G will able to better reference, manage and use all of their data to develop new insights and products, saving both time and development costs. He said eaglecore improves bioinformatics research to help accelerate the development of new products, including pharmaceuticals, consumer goods, food and beverages, livestock and crop development, and biofuels. … Continue reading

Ebola outbreak: Mathematicians play a vital role in the quest to develop a vaccination

Posted: Published on December 4th, 2014

Images of medical workers clad in protective gear have become synonymous with the global fight against Ebola, but a long way from the frontline, mathematicians are unlocking the secrets of what makes the virus tick. Throughout this week researchers have gathered in Melbourne to share what they know about the field of bioinformatics. "Bioinformatics brings together mathematicians, statisticians, computer scientists and biologists to address some of the big problems in the life sciences," Dr Jonathan Keith from Monash University said. Dr Keith, a statistician, said if you considered the eradication of Ebola to be a battle, bioinformatics provided the back up for the foot soldiers on the ground. "You've got the frontline people, but you've got whole layers of people behind them, it is an amazing thing, the way society organises things," he said. "I think they're incredibly brave to be going into the battle zone - I guess we're back room support." They have been providing that support, by examining the virus up close, taking small sequences of DNA molecules and working out how they fit together, using mathematics. "When a long DNA molecule is sequenced, only small parts are sequenced at a time, and these need to be … Continue reading

Highly evolvable malaria-carrying mosquitoes

Posted: Published on December 1st, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 27-Nov-2014 Contact: Irne Perovsek irene.perovsek@isb-sib.ch Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics 27 November 2014 - Anopheles mosquitoes are responsible for transmitting human malaria parasites that cause an estimated 200 million cases and more than 600 thousand deaths each year. However, of the almost 500 different Anopheles species, only a few dozen can carry the parasite and only a handful of species are responsible for the vast majority of transmissions. To investigate the genetic differences between the deadly parasite-transmitting species and their harmless (but still annoying) cousins, an international team of scientists, including researchers from the University of Geneva's Faculty of Medicine and the SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, sequenced the genomes of sixteen Anopheles species from around the globe. Two articles published in today's issue of Science describe detailed genomic comparisons of these mosquitoes and the deadliest of them all, Anopheles gambiae. These results offer new insights into how these species are related to each other and how the dynamic evolution of their genomes may contribute to their flexibility to adapt to new environments and to seek out human blood. These newly-sequenced genomes represent a substantial contribution to the scientific resources that will advance our understanding of the diverse … Continue reading
