Posted: Published on March 9th, 2013

North Charleston, S.C. (PRWEB) March 09, 2013 Charleston personal injury lawyer Ken Harrell today offered Joye Law Firms support to the Brain Injury Association of Americas designation of March as Brain Injury Awareness Month, saying its Anytime, Anywhere, Anyone theme is on the mark. At Joye Law Firm, our lawyers recognize the devastation a brain injury can cause, because weve seen it in our work with catastrophic injury victims who have suffered TBI in car accidents, falls and other accidents, said Harrell, managing partner of the personal injury law firm with offices in North Charleston and Myrtle Beach. We appreciate the Brain Injury Association of Americas efforts to increase awareness about the prevalence of TBI and the fact that an accident that causes a traumatic brain injury can happen to anyone at any time, he said. The Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) is the countrys oldest and largest nationwide brain injury advocacy organization. Its Palmetto State affiliate, the BIA of South Carolina, is located in Columbia. The BIAAs primary message for Brain Injury Awareness Month 2013 is that a brain injury can happen anytime, anywhere, to anyone -- a brain injury does not discriminate. The advocacy group says 1.7 … Continue reading

Study finds risk of brain damage in college football players, even among those without concussions

Public release date: 6-Mar-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Tracy Wheeler wheelet2@ccf.org 216-312-3512 Cleveland Clinic Wednesday, March 6, 2013, Cleveland: Concussions are the leading cause of brain damage in sports, particularly in football. However, researchers at Cleveland Clinic and the University of Rochester have found that football players may suffer long-term brain changes even in the absence of concussion. In a study of 67 college football players, researchers found that the more hits to the head a player absorbed, the higher the levels of a particular brain protein that's known to leak into the bloodstream after a head injury. Even though none of the football players in the study suffered a concussion during the season, four of them showed signs of an autoimmune response that has been associated with brain disorders. "Much attention is being paid to concussions among football players and the big hits that cause them, but this research shows that more common, 'sub-concussive' hits appear to cause damage too," said Damir Janigro, Ph.D., the director of cerebrovascular research in Cleveland Clinic's Lerner Research Institute, who led the study in collaboration with Nicola Marchi, Ph.D., of Cleveland Clinic and Jeffrey Bazarian, M.D., M.P.H., of the Clinical … Continue reading

Newswise TORONTO In a world first, a team of researchers at the Krembil Neuroscience Centre and the University Health Network have shown that Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) in patients with chronic, severe and treatment-resistant Anorexia Nervosa (anorexia) helps some patients achieve and maintain improvements in body weight, mood, and anxiety. The results of this trial, entitled Deep Brain Stimulation of the Subcallosal Cingulate Area for Treatment-Refractory Anorexia Nervosa: A Phase I Pilot Trial, are published today in the medical journal The Lancet. The study is a collaboration between lead author Dr. Nir Lipsman a neurosurgery resident at the University of Toronto and PhD student at the Krembil Neuroscience Centre; Dr. Andres Lozano, a neurosurgeon, at the Krembil Neuroscience Centre of Toronto Western Hospital and a professor and chairman of neurosurgery at the University of Toronto, whose research lab was instrumental in conducting the DBS research; and Dr. Blake Woodside, medical director of Canadas largest eating disorders program at Toronto General Hospital and a professor of psychiatry at the University of Toronto. The phase one safety trial investigated the procedure in six patients who would likely continue with a chronic illness and/or die a premature death because of the severity of … Continue reading

Brain injury may be autoimmune phenomenon, like multiple sclerosis

Posted: Published on March 7th, 2013

Mar. 6, 2013 Most scientists are starting to agree that repeat, sub-concussive hits to the head are dangerous and linked to neurological disorders later in life. A new collaborative study, though, attempted to find out why -- and discovered that damage to the blood-brain barrier and the resulting autoimmune response might be the culprit. Published in journal PLOS ONE by the University of Rochester Medical Center and the Cleveland Clinic, the research suggests a new way of thinking about concussions: That the brain degeneration observed among professional football players (including the much-publicized chronic traumatic encephalopathy) could result from an out-of-control immune response, similar to what multiple sclerosis patients experience. If so, this opens the door to investigating a vaccine or drug therapy to prevent head trauma. Although he emphasized that the research is preliminary, co-author Jeffrey J. Bazarian, M.D., M.P.H., associate professor of Emergency Medicine at URMC, said it's exciting to discover a theory that appears to fit with the reality of what experts observe among athletes. Bazarian worked closely with lead investigator Damir Janigro, Ph.D., professor of Molecular Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic, and 67 college football players from northeast Ohio and Rochester, N.Y., who agreed to participate in … Continue reading

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2013

Fremont Mayor Scott Getzschman has signed a proclamation recognizing March as Brain Injury Awareness Month to promote public awareness on the extent, causes, consequences, treatment and prevention of traumatic brain injury. More than 1.7 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury each year. A traumatic brain injury is a contributing factor to a third of all injury-related deaths in the United States. These injuries are largely the result of motor vehicle crashes, falls, assaults, sporting-related injuries or occupational injuries. Traumatic brain injury is the signature injury of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, presenting new challenges for members of the military and their families. An injury that happens in an instant can result in a lifetime of physical, cognitive and behavior challenges. Early, equal and adequate access to care greatly increases overall quality of life and enables individuals to return to home, school, work and their community. The Brain Injury Association of Nebraska offers education and support to families and individuals with traumatic brain injury with community integration and to live as independently as possible. Pate Rehabilitation Announces Publication Showing the Effectiveness of Brain Injury Rehab

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2013

DALLAS, March 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Pate Rehabilitation, delivering evidence-based treatment and support programs for individuals recovering from acquired brain injuries (ABIs), today announced publication of a landmark article with evidence demonstratingpost-acuterehabilitation as the standard of care followingtraumatic brain injury (TBI): Hayden M.E., Plenger P., Bison K., Kowalske K., Masel B., Qualls D. Treatment Effect Versus Pretreatment Recovery in Persons Withtraumatic brain injury: A Study Regarding the Effectiveness of Postacute Rehabilitation. PM R. 2013. Since rehabilitation of traumaticbrain injurybegan decades ago, there has been conflict about whether rehabilitation is necessary because there is "natural recovery." In 1970, research concluded that after brain cells die, they are not replaced. This belief prompted lack of hope for recovery of functioning following brain injury. In the late 1990s, as imaging technology progressed, research definitively showed that some critical parts of the brain continually develop new neurons throughout the life span. Current research involves extensive mapping of neurons and their connections throughout the brain. This research now shows that the connections between neurons can also evolve. These connections are greatly influenced by the interaction between the person's activity and their environment. Current knowledge about the regeneration and the connectivity of brain cells gives us … Continue reading
