Women in academic cardiology are significantly less likely to be full … – Science Daily

Posted: Published on February 18th, 2017

The first study to evaluate sex differences in academic ranking among academic cardiologists has found that women were significantly less likely than men to be full professors, even when adjusting for factors such as age, years of experience and research productivity that are traditionally associated with academic rank. The report from investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) has ben published in the American Heart Association journal Circulation. "These findings highlight a potential inequity in how men and women in academic cardiology are recognized and rewarded for their work and could reflect the fact that women face persistent barriers to academic advancement," says Daniel M. Blumenthal, MD, MBA, of the MGH Division of Cardiology, lead and corresponding author of the report. "Recruiting more women into cardiology is a top priority for both the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology, not only because cardiology continues to be a male-documented specialty but also because many recent studies suggest that the U.S. is facing a growing shortage of cardiologists in several regions. Addressing any inequities facing women in cardiology will be critical to the success of efforts to recruit more women into our specialty." Blumenthal and his co-authors note that, while … Continue reading

Cardiologists create hilarious heart-healthy memes to celebrate … – ABC News

Posted: Published on February 18th, 2017

Eat your heart out, heart disease. Nothing will get your heart pumping this Valentines Day quite like these Kansas City cardiologists. The doctors at Saint Lukes Hospital used hilarious heart-healthy memes to celebrate the romantic day. We wanted to find a creative way to help patients see the lighthearted and caring nature of these expert physicians while also sharing the important message of heart disease prevention, and encouraging our community to take control of their heart health so they can avoid serious issues in the future, Rebecca Sesler, vice president of marketing at Saint Lukes Health System, wrote to ABC News in an email. Saint Lukes is one of the top 20 cardiology and heart surgery programs in the country, which means our cardiologists and surgeons treat the most complex and challenging heart issues every day, she added. Their timing is perfect as February is also American Heart Month. The hospital explained that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, killing more than 370,000 Americans every year. It claims the lives of more women each year than deaths from all cancers combined and strikes someone in the U.S. every 42 seconds. However, heart disease is … Continue reading

Cardiology services in crisis – Irish Times

Posted: Published on February 11th, 2017

Sir, We are writing on behalf of 245 GPs based in the southeast of Ireland, covering counties Waterford (105), Wexford (85), and South Tipperary (55), to express our major concern regarding the ongoing issue of provision of cardiology services at University Hospital Waterford (UHW). The lack of progress in obtaining a second cardiac catheterisation laboratory is particularly worrying as it unnecessarily endangers patient health. Lack of access to a 24-hour service in our region relegates very vulnerable patients to a second-grade service when more immediate treatment would certainly improve outcomes and save lives. We understand that over 700 patients have been transferred off the waiting list in UHW and have been transferred to services in Cork. This move, which appears to be more politically than medically motivated, has altered waiting-list figures and has provided decision-makers with an excuse not to upgrade southeastern cardiac services. This situation is unacceptable to us and to our patients. We understand that up to 30 per cent of patients have refused to travel to alternative centres. Many of these patients are marginalised and without the social support that would enable travel. We also are led to believe that patients are travelling to Cork to have … Continue reading

Female Cardiologists Less Likely Than Male Colleagues to Be Full Professors – TCTMD

Posted: Published on February 11th, 2017

In academic medicine, full professorship is one of the major rewards that individuals can receive for their work. But a new study suggests that in the field of cardiology, women are less likely than men to hold that prestigious title despite having similar career experiences and other achievements that typically lead to increased academic rank. Although several recent studies have shown the effect of the gender gap on wages in clinical practice, and on satisfaction and perceived pressures at work, the question of equality across genders in academic medicine environments has not been well studied, noted the studys lead author Daniel M. Blumenthal, MD, MBA (Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA), in an interview with TCTMD. Using data from a contemporary, cross-sectional database of US physicians, Blumenthal and colleagues examined faculty rank differences between 3,180 male and 630 female cardiologists affiliated with 109 medical schools in the United States. Subjects were either assistant, associate, or full professors. Even after adjusting for factors known to influence academic rank and promotion such as years of experience, number of publications (total, and first- and last-author papers), affiliation with a medical school ranked highly in research, NIH funding, Medicare revenue, and procedural subspecialties, female cardiologists … Continue reading
