Dr. Alan Tong Discusses CongenItal Heart Disease in Children

Posted: Published on March 8th, 2015

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- This month is designated as congenital heart defect month a time to raise awareness about the issue. Dr. Alan Tong is with Mercy. He specializes in pediatric cardiology. Audrey Esther, KOLR10: Statistics show that more than a million babies worldwide are born with CHD and 100,000 die before their first birthday. How do you calm expectant parents through this? Dr. Tong: It's a scary statistic. It turns out about 1% of babies are born with CHD - the serious types. About 35-36,000 are born in the U.S. with serious CHD. What is reassuring to parents is, that number - multiplied by 2 or 3 - is the actual number of patients with congenital heart problems that are not serious. And in our office, we also see very large numbers of patients who have a finding such as a heart murmur which may be indicative of a heart problem, which often are not. So, by far and away, the vast majority of kids suspected of having heart problems do not have them. Audrey : So there is a range of how severe it can be? Dr. Tong: Correct. Audrey: Do we know why it affects so many newborns? … Continue reading

Caution urged for non-heart attack patients taking daily aspirin

Posted: Published on March 7th, 2015

At Martin ORiordans cardiology practice in the Philadelphia area, it happens weekly. A 45- or 50-year-old patient mentions that her father had a heart attack at the same age. Worried that the same fate will befall her despite being in good health, she takes baby aspirin every day. ORiordans typical response: Please stop. Physicians have known for decades that daily, low-dose aspirin makes sense for patients who have had a heart attack or stroke, as it sharply reduces the chance of having a second one. But for people who have never had one of these cardiovascular events, the thinking on aspirin is less clear, despite two recent large-scale studies. The reason for caution is the very reason that aspirin wards off heart attacks and strokes: It interferes with blood clotting, putting the patient at higher risk of serious gastrointestinal bleeding. Bottom line: Aspirin is more potent than many people realize, said ORiordan, of Mercy Cardiology. People have kind of looked at it as, Aspirin, an apple, a glass of milk, its all good for you, said ORiordan, who is on staff at Lankenau Medical Center. Aspirin is a medication. It is a medication drawing renewed scrutiny, 30 years after the … Continue reading

Easing Depression May Boost Heart Health, Study Finds

Posted: Published on March 7th, 2015

THURSDAY, March 5, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- A new study finds that treating depression with antidepressants may have an added bonus: reducing heart risks. "Screening and treatment of depressive symptoms should be a high priority" in heart patients, lead author Heidi May, a cardiovascular epidemiologist at the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute in Salt Lake City, said in a news release from the American College of Cardiology (ACC). The findings are scheduled to be presented March 15 at the ACC's annual meeting, in San Diego. In its study, May's team analyzed health data from more than 5,300 people in Utah with moderate to severe depression. People who took antidepressants alone had a 53 percent lower risk of death, heart disease and stroke over three years than those who did not take antidepressants or statins. Taking a cholesterol-lowering statin, either alone or with antidepressants, did not significantly reduce the risk, the researchers found. The level of depression appeared to be key, May said. While antidepressant therapy didn't seem to boost the heart health of people with little or no depression, it did have an effect on those with more serious depression. The study couldn't prove that the use of antidepressants helped … Continue reading

Cardinal Health to Acquire Cordis, A Worldwide Leader in Cardiac and Endovascular Medical Products for $1.944 Billion …

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2015

Significantly advances Cardinal Health's offering of interventional cardiology and endovascular solutions for integrated health systems and their patients Creates immediate global scale and scope Fiscal 2017, first full post-close year, accretion is expected to be greater than $0.20 in non-GAAP diluted earnings per share from continuing operations; increasingly accretive thereafter DUBLIN, Ohio Cardinal Health today announced plans to acquire Johnson Johnson's Cordis business, a leading global manufacturer of cardiology and endovascular devices, for $1.944 billion in cash, or approximately $1.594 billion, net of the present value of tax benefits. The acquisition is expected to be financed with a combination of $1.0 billion in new senior unsecured notes and the remainder with existing cash. The transaction is expected to close in the United States and key non-U.S. countries towards the end of calendar 2015. Assuming this timing, Cardinal Health expects fiscal 2017 accretion in non-GAAP diluted earnings per share (EPS(1)) from continuing operations of greater than $0.20 per share, which includes the cost of an incremental $0.07-$0.08 per share of interest expense associated with financing the transaction. The company expects the acquisition to be increasingly accretive thereafter and assumes that synergies will exceed $100 million annually by the end of fiscal … Continue reading

Common Drug for Irregular Heartbeat Tied to Worse Outcomes

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2015

By Alan Mozes HealthDay Reporter WEDNESDAY, March 4, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- Patients who take the heart rhythm drug digoxin may face a nearly 30 percent greater risk of death than patients not taking the drug, a review of prior research suggests. The analysis also suggests that digoxin may increase the risk for death by 60 to 70 percent among patients with both the heart rhythm disorder known as atrial fibrillation and kidney failure. The findings stem from an in-depth look at 19 studies involving nearly a half million atrial fibrillation patients, many of whom were prescribed digoxin (brand names: Digox, Lanoxin) as a way to rein in irregular heartbeats. "Between 15 to 20 percent of atrial fibrillation patients use this drug to control this disorder of the heart, which is very prevalent among older age groups," said study lead author Dr. Waqas Qureshi, a clinical and research fellow of cardiology at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C. Currently, the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology include digoxin as a first-line therapy for the condition, he said. "We found a very strong signal that a significant portion of digoxin users faced an increased risk for … Continue reading
