Expert consensus statement addresses expanding options for percutaneous mechanical support devices Washington, DC (April 7, 2015) - Greater availability of percutaneous mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices for treatment of heart failure is helping expand treatment options for a rapidly growing number of acutely and chronically ill cardiac patients who could benefit from the devices. An expert consensus statement released today by the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI), American College of Cardiology (ACC), Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA) and The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) provides new guidance to help physicians match the right device with the right patient. The statement has been endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA), Cardiological Society of India (CSI) and the Latin American Society of Interventional Cardiology (SOLACI). The Canadian Association of Interventional Cardiology (CAIC) has affirmed the value of the statement. "Percutaneous mechanical circulatory support is revolutionizing the treatment of high-risk cardiac patients," said Charanjit S. Rihal, MD, FSCAI, FACC, chair of the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., and lead author of the paper. "In certain patients, these devices can mean the difference between recovery and the need for heart transplant or death, and they may … Continue reading

Sports cardiology at Lehigh Valley Health Network treats athletes with heart problems

Posted: Published on April 4th, 2015

It has been 25 years since college basketball great Hank Gathers collapsed on the court and died. It was a moment that introduced many to the issue of athletes with potentially dangerous heart conditions. TheLehigh Valley Health Network sports cardiology program evaluates and tests athletes who are experiencing symptoms of heart disease. The program also provides nutritional consultation and training advice for athletes with issues so they can remain active in sports. Gathers was an All-America basketball player for Loyola Marymount University. He was young, strong and appeared to be in peak physical condition. But in a conference tournament semifinal game leading up to the NCAA men's basketball tournament, Gathers scored a basket, ran down the court and suddenly dropped to the floor. Trainers and team physicians unsuccessfully tried to revive him. He was only 23. Many wondered how a world-class athlete in his prime could die so suddenly. Gathers suffered from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a heart muscle disorder. In the years since, reports have detailed other cases of college and high school athletes dying suddenly due to heart failure. While heart problems in young people, particularly athletes, are rare, parents and players should be aware of the symptoms that could … Continue reading
