BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The delegation from the Asean Federation of Cardiology who were in the country to attend a scientific council was welcomed by the Brunei Cardiac Society. They will have a seminar for presidents and office bearers from Asean Countries including Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. It was launched in April of 2014 the Brunei Cardiac Society within a short period of time affiliated with the Asean Federation of Cardiology which works as a support group for the development of cardiology in the entire Asean region through exchange of ideas, expertise and supporting various educational programmes. The tour was hosted by the President of Brunei Cardiac Society, Dato Dr. isham Jaafar and began with a visit to the Jerudong Park Medical Centres Rehabilitation Department and fitness centre. According to a press statement from JPMC, Angiograms, simple and complex angioplasties, bypass surgeries, valve replacements, complex cardiac surgeries, devise closures were all established within ten years from the start of service. Results of a new study challenge the current consensus in cardiology that peak myocardial edema, or heart muscle swelling, only occurs just after a myocardial infarction, or heart attack. In the study, presented as a Late-Breaking Clinical Trial at the American Heart Association (AHA) Scientific Sessions 2014 and published simultaneously in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), scientists discovered a second wave of swelling and inflammation occurs within a week of a heart attack. The researchers from the Mount Sinai Heart at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares Carlos III (CNIC) in Spain believe their identification of this second wave of inflammation may advance the use of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging to better assess initial damage caused by a heart attack. Furthermore, it may enable the design of future targeted therapies that interrupt the two inflammatory reactions to better protect a patient's heart muscle.
