A DIFFERENT BEAT: Addressing the needs of disabled children

Posted: Published on February 25th, 2013

So too do children with disabilities. There are specific differences to their special needs and management. The best way to explain this is through examples as we go through the milestones of development. THE TODDLER F is a boy of 4 who has spastic diplegic cerebral palsy. He was born prematurely and had complications during delivery. F is still unable to walk well. His gross motor functions, namely sitting, standing and walking, is delayed. He walks by cruising along furniture or the wall. He has significant spasticity in both legs and when he stands, he tiptoes with knocked knees. He attends physiotherapy sessions regularly and exercises at home too. His parents are seeking treatment to make him walk better. Apart from that, he interacts well with his siblings. However, his communication skills are mildly impaired. He has difficulty completing a sentence but he is able to understand his parents well. Fs therapy focuses on safe and efficient ambulation, the use of orthotics and aids for walking, spasticity management, effective communication and monitoring as well as attempts at catching up with his development. THE SCHOOLING TEENAGER M is a 9-year-old girl who also suffers from spastic diplegic cerebral palsy. She is … Continue reading

Walk for Cerebral Palsy set for March 30

Posted: Published on February 23rd, 2013

Its easy to talk about helping. On March 30, folks can start walking to help the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas. The Shootin Out Cerebral Palsy 5K Walk is the first of what organizer Candy Schulz hopes to make an annual fundraising event. Go big or go home. My goal is 500 entries, said Schulz, whose 8-year-old daughter receives cerebral palsy treatment at the hospital. Long as theres not a hail storm or tornado, well be there. Schulz turned to the Scottish Rite after physicians at other hospitals told her that Kaitlyn, her daughter, would grow out of her abnormalities. Physicians at the hospital diagnosed the second-grader with cerebral palsy and had a brace built to help keep her left foot from turning in. Weve been there twice since then and [they] never sent me a bill, Schulz said. Nothing. The hospital is a pediatric center for the treatment of orthopedic conditions, certain related neurological disorders and learning disorders, such as dyslexia. Admission is open to Texas children up to 18 years of age. Patients receive treatment regardless of the familys ability to pay, a spokeswoman for the hospital said. Medicaid rules block mom's treatment

Posted: Published on February 18th, 2013

SAN ANTONIO - When Shontae Minor and boyfriend Khristian Rohena learned she was pregnant with quadruplets, they followed their San Antonio doctor's advice and sought a selective fetal reduction. The procedure would have eliminated two of the fetuses while they still were in her womb, raising the chances that the remaining two would survive and be healthy, according to medical experts. The doctor also advised Minor, 22, that her own health could be in jeopardy if she attempted to carry all four to term. But a state worker told the couple - after they had already traveled to Houston for the procedure - that Medicaid wouldn't pay the $4,000 bill for the fetal reduction. Fetal reduction for Medicaid patients like Minor, who qualifies because she is low-income, is caught up in the politics of abortion in Texas. Since the procedure is classified as abortion, federal rules apply: Medicaid will only pay in cases of rape or incest or if it's necessary to save the mother's life. Now, the state-federal tax-funded health plan could end up paying $1 million or more to provide Minor's complicated prenatal care, which included six weeks of hospitalization, and care for babies. In Texas, Medicaid spending … Continue reading

New technology advances cerebral palsy treatment

Posted: Published on February 5th, 2013

Just two years following a diagnosis of cerebral palsy at Seattle Childrens Hospital, Cody Marmon took his first independent steps. He was 3 years, one month and one day old. It was really exciting to watch, said Tina Marmon, Codys mother. Dr. David G. Embrey, the research program coordinator at MultiCare Good Samaritan Childrens Therapy Unit, witnessed Codys first steps along with Tina. About the same time, Embrey monitored Codys muscle movements and compared them with his brothers muscle movements, utilizing an innovative technology called Surface Electroymyography (SEMG). The technology, designed and manufactured by Noraxon, gives doctors an ability to place sensors on the top of the skin and record electrical signals from the brain that fire to make muscles move. The first time I went inside the body of a child with SEMG, I was absolutely astonished, Embrey said. The body was not functioning at all like my eyes were telling me. Ive now been able to take the technology and change what I do in treatment to become more effective. Embrey and his colleagues at Good Samaritan Childrens Therapy Unit recently were featured in Health Heroes on The Discovery Channel. The documentary explained how Embrey used SEMG to … Continue reading

By Kathy Jefcoats kjefcoats@news-daily.com JONESBORO Clayton County police said a teenager with cerebral palsy found in a Jonesboro apartment weighed less than 30 pounds and gave off an odor that would "wake the dead." Five adults have been indicted on multiple counts of contributing to the deprivation of children and first degree child cruelty involving the discovery of five children apparently living in squalor inside an apartment on Arrowhead Boulevard in April. The most severely malnourished and deprived child was a 15-year-old boy. Police said he weighed less than 30 pounds the average for a 5-year-old with cerebral palsy. A social worker who visited the home that day said the filthy child gave off an odor that would "wake the dead." The boy's biological mother, Jutoi Mikia Hoskins, 33, her sister, Alicia Etoyal Doss, 35, their father, Larry Darnell Spears, 59, and Darryl W. Smith, 28, and Christine Turner were indicted in the case by a Clayton County grand jury Wednesday. Hoskins and Doss are being held in the Clayton County Jail. According to court documents, Hoskins gave up custody of her son to her mother when he was 4 or 5 because caring for him was too much for … Continue reading
