Mother’s love nurtures sick child to Harvard – Shanghai Daily (subscription)

Posted: Published on July 1st, 2017

ENGLISH poet George Herbert once said, One good mother is worth a hundred schoolmasters. In the case of Ding Zheng, who was born with cerebral palsy in central Chinas Hubei Province and is studying law at Harvard University, his mother Zou Hongyan is worth a thousand schoolmasters and more. There is little value in rescuing the baby. He will become mentally disabled or paralyzed. I suggest you give up, a doctor at Jingzhou District Hospital told Zou and her family on July 21, 1988. Zou was shocked. We shall give up the baby. He will make our whole life miserable, her husband said. His rational words hurt Zou deeply. On the fourth day after giving birth, Zou managed to go to the intensive care unit where her baby was, only to find him especially quiet, neither crying nor even frowning after a nurse gave him injections of medicine. The 25-year-old mother had suffered enough to give birth to the child. She had been carried home several times by her students after fainting during her pregnancy while teaching; she had forced herself out of the habit of sleeping late, and into one of reading poems for antenatal training in the early … Continue reading

Potential Medicaid funding cuts drawing concerns – Gwinnettdailypost.com

Posted: Published on June 28th, 2017

ATLANTA The potential cuts in the Medicaid program, as outlined in the GOP health care bills, have a deeply felt meaning for Mitzi Proffitt and her family. Shes employed by a nonprofit that provides services to Georgia families impacted by disabilities or special health care needs. And at home, Mitzi arranges for help at her east Georgia home for her son, Joshua, 22, who has cerebral palsy and gets around with a power wheelchair. I live it and work it, she says. Joshua receives Medicaid services through a waiver program for people with developmental disabilities. Because of his physical limitations, Joshua gets help with dressing, eating and transportation, among other services, through the COMP waiver. He now attends college. Hes smart as a tack mentally, Mitzi says. He can talk but cant move. The aid also allows her to work at the nonprofit Parent to Parent of Georgia. So when the House Republican bill and the somewhat different Senate version unveiled last week outline cuts to Medicaid, Mitzi fears the potential impact on her son if the legislation becomes law. Eventually, through a reduction or elimination of the waiver services, Joshua would be put in a nursing home, she says. … Continue reading

$1M donation funds Bacharach’s new neurorecovery center – Press of Atlantic City

Posted: Published on June 28th, 2017

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP A $1 million donation will help Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation launch a specialized center focused on recovery treatment for neurological diseases and disorders. James Klinghoffer, local philanthropist and Longport resident, donated the money to the health provider that will fund the James Klinghoffer Neurorecovery Center, which is slated to open this fall. The money will help pay for advanced robotic technology used to help patients regain mobility. I thought, from my own perspective, if I had a stroke and had a spastic arm, what would it be worth to get treatment to help me dress myself again, said Gabe Staino, Bacharach senior development officer. Just the idea that I could be independent enough to dress myself, to walk again ... these devices take it to another level. Klinghoffer is known for donating money to Shore Medical Center in Somers Point for its James Klinghoffer Emergency Pavilion and the hospitals Harry and Edith Klinghoffer Pediatric Care Center, along with donations to Jewish Family Service of Atlantic and Cape May, Gildas Club and other organizations. He said he credits his parents, Harry and Edith Klinghoffer, as the inspiration for his charitable donations that support community providers and services. I give … Continue reading

Emma Harper is a non-verbal 10-year-old from Duncan who has battled against cerebral palsy and a broad spectrum genetic disorder her entire life but now, with the help of a new stem cell treatment she could finally find her voice. One day, Emmas parents Micah and Tara Sears Harper found a video online of a young girl with the same type of cerebral palsy as Emma. Stem cell treatments helped the girl have a better quality of life and Micah has hope the treatments will do the same for Emma. Really what the STEM cell treatment is supposed to do is it finds where it needs to go, Micah said. Because stem cells go to what we are hoping is going to be the areas of her brain that were damaged and start repairing that area, so she can be more verbal were hoping that through this she is going to be able to find her voice. Its an expensive process which totals around $25,000, but the family is hoping the community will aid them in their journey through a ministry they created. A Vote of Conscience and Courage – New York Times

Posted: Published on June 27th, 2017

This week, these senators will face a career-defining choice. It is not an easy one for many of them. Republicans have spent years promising to repeal Obamacare. Now the Senate is nearing a decision on whether to do so. Opposing the bill risks marking any Republican as a traitor to the party. By late Monday, enough Republicans were nonetheless expressing skepticism about the bill to put its success in serious doubt. Susan Collins of Maine, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Dean Heller of Nevada have all distanced themselves from the bill. But weve seen a version of this story before. House Republicans also expressed serious doubts only to wilt after party leaders made superficial changes to the bill. The Senate bill remains alive until its dead. In the meantime, I hope that each senator takes some time away from the daily swirl of Capitol Hill to think back to the reasons they entered politics. I hope they understand that this bill is a test of conscience and of courage. A yes vote is still the politically easy vote for any Republican. But it is also a vote that will come back to haunt many senators when they reflect on their … Continue reading

The bullet caused an arm fracture, damage to multiple organs, as well as severe bleeding that left him in a coma. On the treating doctors recommendation, the family applied for an urgent permit for Khaled and an escort to travel through the Israeli-controlled Erez crossingto Jerusalem for specialized care, but the permit was denied. We are waiting to transfer him to the hospital in Jerusalem, but we dont know why Israel is refusing to let him in through Erez crossing, said Khaleds father to Defense for Children International Palestine. He has the right to be treated and return home to his family and his school. Dr. Iyad Jabri, the head of Surgery and Urology Department at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir … Continue reading
