Von Schamann gets a kick out of advocating for children with special needs – Tulsa World

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2017

Uwe von Schamann knows a lot about pressure. Von Schamann, a place kicker, helped the Oklahoma Sooners to the 1975 National Championship, and as a pro, helped the Miami Dolphins to two Super Bowls. Hes best known for The Kick, a game-winning 41-yard field goal that gave OU a last-second win over Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio in 1977. During a time out, before the kick, the Buckeye crowd started chanting Block that kick! Block that kick! and von Schamann started directing the crowd with his hands like an orchestra composer. The kick went straight down the middle for the 29-28 Sooner win. Now, 40 years later, hes directing a different team with a different set of pressures. Von Schamann has teamed up with The Childrens Center, a rehabilitation hospital in Bethany, Okla. Von Schamann was the speaker at the Sand Springs Chamber of Commerce Open Forum, Monday, July 10, at the Tulsa Tech campus, explaining the history and current functions of the private, non-profit rehabilitation hospital. After his time in the NFL, von Schamann toured a medical facility for individuals with special needs, and he knew he had to get involved. Since then, von Schamann has become an … Continue reading

US Rep. Yarmuth: ‘Keep being loud’ to protect healthcare – Louisville Eccentric Observer

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2017

U.S. Rep John Yarmuth told a crowd recently that the tone of debate over healthcare must change from one of personal attack to one of policy debate. We need to change the tone of our dialogue, it really isnt productive, so if I believe that its accurate to say that a certain health care policy will result in people dying, its OK for me to say that. Its not OK for me to say that the supporters of that proposal are killers. I think thats the kind of distinction we have to make, he said during the town hall meeting Sunday July 10, at Bellarmine University. Im not going to make any personal attacks on people who are supporting policies that I dont support, but I am going to attack the policies that I dont support, he told the audience of more than 700 people. A strong supporter of the Affordable Care Act, Yarmuth discussed how much the bill has benefited Kentucky, in particular causing the uninsured rate to drop to 6.1 percent from 13.6 percent.Every state that expanded Medicaid had huge drops in the number of uninsured as well. Yarmuth said the Senates healthcare proposal, written by Kentuckys senior … Continue reading

Its spontaneous; fun; adrenaline-inducing; and, for those living with neurological and developmental disorders, potentially life-changing. Equine-assisted therapy, otherwise known as hippotherapy, is a long-existing form of therapy that utilizes horses as a vehicle for facilitating improvement in the motor skills of the neurologically troubled, such as those who suffer from cerebral palsy, autism, Alzheimer's disease, dementia, down syndrome and other ailments. According to a study by the United Nations, up to one billion people in the world suffer from neurological disorders, with the population of the earth being seven billion. With hippotherapy, the lives of many living with mental illness have the potential to change, according to a Grand Valley State University professor, Beth Macauley, who teaches communication sciences and disorders and has been studying and practicing hippotherapy for years. Her work started when she was growing up on her parents farm. She said she always had a penchant for working with people with disabilities and claimed to have the horse gene from her parents. Franciscan Children’s teen cerebral palsy patient faces uncertain future under Trumpcare – Metro US

Posted: Published on July 6th, 2017

Brandon Smart is a 15-year-old boy from Howland, Maine. He was born prematurely at 28 weeks, declared blind and diagnosed with cerebral palsy before he turned 1. His life has been filled with struggle but also hope. He has spent the last four months at Franciscan Children's to be treated for infected pressure ulcers and broken bones in his legs. Smart's family and doctors shared their concern with President Trump's proposal to "repeal and replace" Obamacare at a press event on Thursday at the hospital. "The Smart family has private insurance but relies on federal Medicaid funding to supplement coverage of Brandons extensive medical expenses and nursing care," the hospital said in a press release.Medicaid would be cut under Trump's proposal. Treatment for Brandon is difficult in Maine with the complexity of his condition, his doctors said. Transportation to the hospital and therapy to strengthen him is a complex issue. The type of care for children with long-term mental and physical disabilities that Franciscan Children's provides is unique in the Boston area and the US, said John Nash, president and CEO of Franciscan Children's, and Smart's doctor, Elisabeth Schainker. When Obamacare was enacted, it added money to Medicaid, but for … Continue reading

Spasticity isstiffness or tightening of muscles that leads to involuntary movements. Physical therapy is often necessary to address movement problems, but researchers have disagreed on the best approach. Neurodevelopmental treatment, or NDT, isa hands-on approach to improving movement in patientswith CP, stroke, or head injury. It involves guiding a patients movements. Proponents say it allows a physical therapist to assess and analyze movements while training patients. South Korean researchers decided to investigate the effects of a year of NDT physical therapyon the muscle strength, spasticity, and movement of children with CP. The study included175 children with spastic cerebral palsy, aged 3 to 18. The children had NDT physical therapy 35 minutes a day, two to three times a week, for a … Continue reading
