Cerebral Palsy: A Set of Life-Altering Neurological Disorders

Posted: Published on July 5th, 2013

Cerebral Palsy: Life-Altering Neurological Disorders Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a set ofneurological disordersthat permanently affect bodily movement and muscle coordination. Although much remains unknown about the causes of CP, evidence from research strongly suggests that infections, birth injuries, poor oxygen supply to the fetal brain before, during and immediately after delivery, and severe illness caused by trauma can result in CP. Cerebral Palsy is a serious motor condition, which experts say is neither genetic nor a medical condition, but often arises at the time of birth as a result of fetal distress during delivery. Risk Factors for CP The United Cerebral Palsy Association says that several factors during delivery can result in CP, including: Treatment for CP Children with CP will typically require long-term care from numerous medical, psychological and educational professionals, including pediatricians to oversee plans of care, pediatric neurologists to treat neurological disorders in children, orthopedists who can treat muscle and bone disorders, occupational therapists to help with everyday activities and use of adaptive products to live, developmental therapists to help with social and interpersonal skills and age-appropriate behaviors, social workers who assist families with accessing services and transitional care, and special education teachers to address learning disabilities … Continue reading

Stem-cell treatment trials give family hope

Posted: Published on July 2nd, 2013

By Clare Speak For the Post Five-year-old Nelly Vadoviov is the first Slovak child to undergo an experimental stem-cell treatment, using stem cells from the umbilical cord blood taken at her birth. The pioneering treatment is for cerebral palsy and is being conducted during clinical trials at Duke University Hospital in the United States. Nelly was picked to take part in the trial by the Cord Blood Center (CBC) Group, which coordinates and enables the participation of patients in clinical trials of the treatment as part of a project called Pomocnruka, or Helping Hand. CBC has centers in six countries including Slovakia and the Czech Republic and works within many Czech maternity hospitals, offering collection and preservation of umbilical cord blood, which are rich in stem cells. The cells are stored in private banks for future use by the child or relatives. There are high hopes among experts of stem-cell treatment of providing a cure for Cerebral Palsy, among other disorders. According to CBC, most clinical trials for stem-cell treatment take place outside of Europe, which is why they began their cooperation with the U.S. hospital. So far, some 200 children worldwide have undergone the experimental treatment, most of them … Continue reading

Mich. man driving wheelchair to White House for marijuana

Posted: Published on July 2nd, 2013

TAYLOR, Mich., July 1 (UPI) -- A Michigan man with cerebral palsy said he is rolling his wheelchair to Washington in the hopes of talking to President Obama about medical marijuana. Curtis Kile, 52, said he left his Taylor home June 14 on a mission to steer his motorized wheelchair to the White House for a chat with President Barack Obama about nationwide legalization of marijuana, a drug he said has been instrumental in his treatment, the Detroit Free Press reported Monday. Kile said Saturday in Hagerstown, Md., he is hoping to roll up to the White House and meet with Obama July 4. The man's son, Curtis Kile Jr., 17, is serving as his support crew, driving a Ford Econoline van alongside his father's wheelchair. Kile said the White House hasn't responded to any of his communication efforts, but he is hopeful that his journey will help his cause. "The alcohol industry doesn't want it legal, and the pharmaceutical and the tobacco companies don't want that, because it's going to bite into their profits," he said. "It's the money that's stopping it, and that's wrong." More here: Mich. man driving wheelchair to White House for marijuana … Continue reading

Revolutionary Treatment for Stroke Now Available in Western Australia

Perth, Australia (PRWEB) June 18, 2013 A ground-breaking therapy service has been launched in Perth to offer stroke patients a new rehabilitation treatment. Constraint Therapy Australia celebrated its launch earlier this month and offers a new intensive rehabilitation program to help people who have suffered a stroke as well as those with cerebral palsy and some other neurological conditions. Constraint Therapy is the revolutionary brain-based treatment that rewires the brain helping people to improve the use of their hand and arm after brain injury. Constraint Therapy was pioneered by Prof. Edward Taub at The University of Alabama, Birmingham, USA. Prof. Taub is a neuroscientist whose work has been described as at the forefront of a revolution in rehabilitation. Director of Constraint Therapy Australia Daniel Lane trained with Professor Taub and his team at the renowned Taub Therapy Clinic at the University of Alabama and has now established Western Australia's first Constraint Therapy Clinic. Constraint Therapy works by harnessing the brain's natural ability to change its own structure and function, a process known as neuroplasticity," says Daniel Lane. Whole body vibration therapy increases bone strength

Posted: Published on June 18th, 2013

June 17, 2013 A treatment known as whole body vibration therapy significantly increases bone strength among adolescents with cerebral palsy, a new clinical trial from New Zealand shows. The results were presented Saturday at The Endocrine Society's 95th Annual Meeting in San Francisco. Cerebral palsy affects more than half a million people in the United States. Caused by brain damage around the time of birth, the disorder affects muscle tone and movement, which can severely decrease the quality of life by making walking and other daily activities difficult. As movement becomes impaired, disuse weakens both the muscles and bones. Although few therapies have proven successful at increasing bone and muscle strength among people with cerebral palsy, one promising approach is whole body vibration therapy, or WBVT. This method, as its name implies, involves standing on a machine that moves the body, causing a tilting movement of the pelvis similar to the motion of walking but much more frequently. Previous research among healthy adults, including post-menopausal women, has demonstrated that whole body vibration therapy can promote bone and muscle health. To see if these beneficial effects occur in adolescents with cerebral palsy, researchers measured bone-mineral density and muscle mass after a … Continue reading

Fighting disease a family affair

BOULARDERIE EAST When Alyssa MacLeod walks into the room, her face breaks into a megawatt smile. There is a slight break to her stride, something not quite perfect, yet purposeful and determined. MacLeod has fire and passion and more determination than many 22-year-olds could even imagine. On this day, she has her father at her side, just like always. Fathers Day seems like an appropriate time to talk about her years of surgeries, treatments and physiotherapy aimed at helping her live better with cerebral palsy. My mother stayed home to look after my younger sister, and my father travelled to Montreal with me since I was three years old, MacLeod said. Out of 47 trips to the Shriners hospital in Montreal, my dad only missed one, and that was because he was out west working. Her father, Richard MacLeod, looks with pride at his slight, pretty daughter. Its difficult to see your little girl go through what she has, but it was definitely worth all the work. Alyssa is one of 100 patients with cerebral palsy who underwent what is called selective dorsal rhizotomy 19 years ago at the Montreal hospital.
