Twins with Cerebral palsy meet their major league idol

Posted: Published on June 14th, 2013

Minneapolis, M.N. - It's not very often you get the chance to meet your biggest role model, but it happened for two very special young boys from Iowa. Braden and Dathan Miller are twins, born just a minute apart. They were slow to develop and by the time they were a year-and-a-half they were diagnosed with Cerebral palsy. Their dream is to be able to run the bases like their favorite players on their favorite team- the Minnesota Twins. Recent surgery on their legs gives them more control over their bodies. And now, they're running at home on a chalk-drawn diamond in the driveway. "They may never be able to play baseball because of their Cerebral palsy," said Braden and Dathan's mother, "But that's kind of the next best thing so it's a lot of fun for them to run around the bases and they pretend to slide into home base and hit a home runs and everything that goes along with it." They've been practicing a lot and Wednesday, they got to play with their baseball idol, Minnesota Twins star Joe Mauer. He stopped by the children's hospital where they're receiving treatment. The boys were speechless but their faces … Continue reading

Cerebral palsy surgery stands test of time: study

Posted: Published on June 12th, 2013

MONTREAL - Ali Ammar had a difficult start in life. Born with a severe form of cerebral palsy, Ammar was paralyzed on one side of his body. He doesnt remember the surgery he had at the Montreal Childrens Hospital when he was 2, but he can tell from old family videos that the difference was almost immediate. Now 24, he can walk unaided, more than two decades after doctors said he would rely on a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Its a process, but since the first day you get better and better, he said on Tuesday at the Childrens, where doctors presented the results of the first study into the long-term effectiveness of the treatment he received as a toddler. The technique, called selective dorsal rhizotomy, is well-established, but prior to the study its long-term effectiveness was unclear. The surgery is primarily used to treat spastic cerebral palsy, which causes tightness in limb muscles and is the most common form of the disorder. Cerebral palsy affects approximately two out of every 1,000 children born in Quebec, according to research published in 2013 by doctors at the Childrens and the McGill University Health Centre. People with spastic cerebral … Continue reading

A student team at the University of Virginia's School of Engineering and Applied Science won first place in the 2012 World Cerebral Palsy Day "Change My World in One Minute" competition for its design of a solar-powered wheelchair with retractable panels. Seventeen million people worldwide live with cerebral palsy, a permanent disability that affects movement ranging from a weakness in one hand to an almost complete lack of voluntary movement. World Cerebral Palsy Day was established in 2012 with an invitation for people with CP, their families and friends to post ideas online for something that could be created, developed or modified that would change the world for someone with a disability. Ideas were posted as text or video, with the specification that each idea could take only one minute to read or watch. In early September, people were encouraged to go online, review the submitted ideas and vote for … Continue reading

Ill jump out of a plane to help the brave lad 10:21am Thursday 6th June 2013 in News By Tui Benjamin, Reporter A YOUNGSTER from Whitefield with cerebral palsy may have the chance to undergo pioneering treatment in part thanks to a Bury mans generosity. James Simpson, aged 11 months, took nine minutes to begin breathing spontaneously after his birth in June 2012, the lack of oxygen causing him significant brain damage. He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy aged six months and parents Gill and Mark Simpson, of Goats Gate Terrace, hope raising 6,000 for advanced biomechanical rehabilit-ation (ABR) will give their little boy a brighter future. This Saturday, friend Carl Sammon, aged 35, of Chestnut Avenue, Bury, is to complete a 15,000ft tandem skydive to help pay for the alternative treatment. Mum-of-one and full time primary teacher Gill, aged 28, said: We are over-whelmed by the support we have received so far and cant thank Carl enough for jumping out of a plane for James! Asons Solicitors comment of Cerebral Palsy Treatment Breakthrough

Posted: Published on June 7th, 2013

(PRWEB UK) 6 June 2013 The reports claims that a young boy known only as L.B, had been left in a vegetative state after going into cardiac arrest in November 2008 (1). However, only a few weeks after being given an intravenous stem cell treatment from a frozen sample of blood for his umbilical cord, his symptoms significantly improved and within only a few months he was able to communicate and move around (1). Asons executive Suzanne Yates commented on this breakthrough saying: I find it amazing that modern research has been able to provide this boy with a quality of life that he would never have had prior to this treatment. Cerebral Palsy as extensive as this would have left the boy completely unable to enjoy his life and would have required a lifetime of care. Luckily for him and his family, he will able to grow up a happy child. The doctors who performed the treatment said that these results will go some way to diminish long held doubts regarding peoples thoughts and attitudes towards the effectiveness of stem cell therapy, as quoted in the article (1). The parents of L.B began researching possible treatments for their son … Continue reading

Jetstar refuses flight to disabled woman

Posted: Published on June 3rd, 2013

Australian budget airline, Jetstar, pulled a woman with cerebral palsy from a flight because it believed she could not understand instructions.AP Budget airline Jetstar pulled a woman with cerebral palsy from a flight because it believed she could not understand instructions. Ashley Papworth, 21, was travelling from Brisbane, Australia to Newcastle to visit her family, but was barred from the flight because cabin crew thought she was unable to understand what they were saying. Ms Papworth uses a wheelchair and hearing aid, but has travelled extensively without discrimination. Her grandfather, Michael Folbigg, said he was horrified by her treatment by the airline. "There were family members available to help Ashley on to the flight and also to help with her on arrival at Newcastle," Folbigg said. "(The airline) cited difficulties in communication as their reason for their refusal. Ashley is (diagnosed with) cerebral palsy, not an imbecile." A Jetstar spokesman said Papworth had travelled with family on previous occasions and the airline apologized for the inconvenience she suffered. "One of our key independent traveller requirements is that a passenger must be able to communicate that they have understood our crew's safety and emergency instructions," the spokesman said. "In this case, … Continue reading

Man gets two years in child endangering

Harrison Twp. father William Nath on Thursday was sentenced to two years incarceration after pleading guilty to two counts of endangering children after his 13-year-old daughter with cerebral palsy was found to weigh 57 pounds. The girls mother, Susanne Casavant, 48, was sentenced earlier this month to community control sanctions for five years, court costs, a fine and treatment after pleading guilty to two counts of child endangering. Nath, 38, pleaded guilty in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court to the same counts. Officials have said the girl is in the care of Children Services and is reportedly doing well. A Montgomery County Sheriffs Office report from Aug. 15, 2012 shows that a deputy made contact with a Dayton Childrens Hospital social worker, who said a 13-year-old girl who had cerebral palsy and had difficulty speaking was brought in with suspicious bruising and malnutrition. A Children Services case worker reported that a Meadowdale High School employee said that when the girl got to school she was very hungry and asked for another breakfast after eating her first serving then another after that. The report said school officials were concerned since the girl had lost several pounds since the year before. Judge … Continue reading

Doctors claim cerebral palsy 'cure'

Research into stem cell treatments has shown promising progress Photograph: Getty Images Medics in Germany said they have successfully treated a child with cerebral palsy for the first time. Just weeks after being given an intravenous stem cell treatment from umbilical cord blood, the symptoms of a boy who had been left in a vegetative state after a heart attack improved considerably and within months he could talk and move. The doctors who carried out the treatment said the results of the treatment dispel "long-held doubts" surrounding the effectiveness of stem cell therapy. After going into cardiac arrest in November 2008, the two-year-old boy, known only as LB, was left paralysed with severe brain damage and in a vegetative state. Doctors warned his parents that his chances of survival were minimal. Until now, there has been no treatment for the cause of what is known as infantile cerebral palsy. Dr Arne Jensen of the Campus Clinic Gynaecology in Bochum, who carried out the new treatment, said: "In their desperate situation, the parents searched the literature for alternative therapies. They contacted us and asked about the possibilities of using their son's cord blood, frozen at his birth." Nine weeks after the … Continue reading
