Drug users may not dial 999 in emergencies or give full information to doctors and nurses who treat them because they fear potential criminal prosecution, a report said. The British Medical Association (BMA) said the medical profession does not condone drug-taking but warned of users not seeking medical help when they need it, as they are criminalised in current drugs policy. The report said drugs policy does not have an adequate focus on health, and it called for addicts to be treated like those who have any other illness. Currently, users may be discouraged from approaching drug services, contacting paramedics in emergency situations or volunteering accurate or complete information to health professionals because they fear policies are mainly focused on criminal justice, the BMA said. The report also pointed out "a widely held view within the drugs field that the current legal framework has failed to deliver its intended goals of reducing illicit drug use". And it said doctors should have a key role in "refocusing the debate" and influencing global drug policy. The report concluded drug dependency is a medical condition as well as a legal problem and that alternatives to the current approach to UK drug policy should … Continue reading

Drug Companies Exert Undue Influence over FDA

Posted: Published on January 16th, 2013

Posted by Michael MonheitJanuary 15, 2013 7:35 AM Continued dependence on opioids has left many Americans questioning the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and it's continued failure to take appropriate note and warn consumers about the dangerous and addictive effects of such medication. Although the official stance of the FDA on opioids such as OxyCotin has been that opioid based drugs pose very little potential of addiction, or as per the drugs label, the risks of addiction were reported to be small, the nation continues to battle against an ongoing epidemic with painkiller dependency. With such a high prevalance of addiction, why then would the FDA continue to promote such medication? More than two million have suffered, or continue to suffer, from an addiction to prescription painkillers; making the problem more widespread than cocaine and heroine nationwide. Many of the doctors seem unaware of the potential addictive nature of the drugs and continue to prescribe addictive medication to their patients. The continued support by the medical community appears to stem from the FDA itself, where the panel of doctors who approved the opioid policy had previous financial relationships with Purdue, a known manufacturer of such prescription medication. The influence of … Continue reading

More drug-related crimes in Maine

Posted: Published on January 10th, 2013

WINTHROP, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Between pharmacy robberies, home invasions, and shootings, Maine police are seeing a common connection and recent crime: drug dependency. Winthrop Police say that's the reason four masked men barged in to a 71-year-old woman's home over the weekend, pushing her over and putting her to the floor as they searched her mobile home for prescription drugs. Police Chief Joseph Young said the four suspects are still at large. They made off with money, but no drugs. "There are more people that are drug dependent, that are doing desperate things," said Chief Young. He said the town of Winthrop has seen a 12 percent increase in theft over the last year, and while home invasions are not common, he is seeing them happen around the state more frequently. "They're happening...and I think it's all drug-related," said Chief Young. In Lebanon, police are investigating a possible connection to prescription drugs in a shooting on Tuesday. Investigators say Richard Potorski came home for lunch to find an intruder in his home. The suspect shot Potorski in the shoulder, then stole his car. It was later found abandonded ina Rochester, New Hampshire parking lot. Investigatos say they are no … Continue reading

Ex-Rep. Patrick Kennedy Battles Pot Legalization

Posted: Published on January 7th, 2013

Liberal Says Painkiller Addiction Taught Valuable Lesson By Reuters Published January 05, 2013. Retired Rhode Island Congressman Patrick Kennedy is taking aim at what he sees as knee-jerk support for marijuana legalization among his fellow liberals, in a project that carries special meaning for the self-confessed former Oxycontin addict. Kennedy, 45, a Democrat and younger son of the late Lion of the Senate Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts, is leading a group called Project SAM (Smart Approaches to Marijuana) that opposes legalization and seeks to rise above Americas culture war over pot with its images of long-haired hippies battling law-and-order conservatives. Project proposals include increased funding for mental health courts and treatment of drug dependency, so those caught using marijuana might avoid incarceration, get help and potentially have their criminal records cleared. Kennedy wants cancer patients and others with serious illnesses to be able to obtain drugs with cannabinoids, but in a more regulated way that could involve the U.S. Food and Drug Administration playing a larger role. The eight-term former congressman from Rhode Island and the group he chairs will put forth their plan on Wednesday with a media appearance in Denver. Their efforts follow the November election that … Continue reading

Overcoming addiction

Posted: Published on January 4th, 2013

A lot remains to be understood by society when it comes to alcohol and substance addiction. It can be difficult, even for those addicts who desperately want help to seek it out, because there is a good deal of blame directed at them for their choices. Fortunately, there are a large number of rehabilitation options right here in Pasadena. Larry Burton has helped hundreds of people move forward in their lives using holistic techniques to deal with underlying and lingering issues surrounding addiction. While he wholly endorses traditional 12-step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous, he believes a combination of approaches is necessary to address those deep-seated issues that dont go away the second someone stops drinking alcohol or using drugs. Part of the challenge of recovery is that you can help someone get off drugs, but how do you help them cope with stress, anger, guilt and shame? Burton asked. You can take away their drugs but what have you given them? We work through the bodys subtle energy system, through scientifically established principles of psychology. I think everything at its core is a form of energy. The pain is disrupted energy, and you need to balance that out in order … Continue reading

New law hopes to solve drug dependent baby epidemic

Posted: Published on January 3rd, 2013

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - January 1st marked a big step in the fight to stop the birth of babies dependent on drugs. A law passed in 2012 goes into effect, requiring hospitals across the state to track babies born with symptoms in an online database. "This addition will allow us to have more real-time data about NAS incidence and will help inform future efforts aimed at primary evaluation of NAS," said Commissioner John J. Dreyzehner. Until now, hospitals have individually tracked results and the state relied on discharge records to count the number of babies affected in our state. "You have, you know, only a certain amount of resources so you want to put those resources to the best use you can. So we're trying to find out exactly how many babies are affected, and where those babies are located," said East Tennessee Children's Hospital neonatologist Dr. John Buchheit. ETCH receives NAS babies from all across the state. A year ago, it created the world's first unit designed especially to treat babies with drug dependency. The unit's 16 beds have never been fully occupied since day one, and overflow always stretches into several NICUs. Numbers at Children's have tripled just … Continue reading
