Could Your Meds Make You Suicidal?

Posted: Published on November 20th, 2012

Data Based Medicine Americas Ltd. announces free online tool to show possible links between prescription drugs and suicide Toronto, Canada (PRWEB) November 19, 2012 According to the World Health Organizations World Report on Violence and Health, each year, more than 1.6 million people lose their lives to violence, with 50% of these deaths classified as suicides. Self-inflicted injuries are the fourth leading cause of death, the sixth leading cause of ill-health and disability, and the leading cause of death for people aged 15-35 years. Suicide is the deliberate termination of ones existence, while in the possession and enjoyment of his or her mental faculties. Taking one's own life under the influence of drugs is death by misadventure, not suicide, says says Dr. David Healy, a world-renowned psychiatrist who has written extensively about the lack of data in evidence-based medicine, including in his latest book, Pharmageddon. This has huge legal, financial, insurance, and religious implications as well as being of great importance to family and friends. Healy says that the risk of suicide is greatest when a patient begins or stops taking a prescription drug. Similar to space shuttle travel, the riskiest periods for many drug side effects are entry into … Continue reading

Some drug side effects only identified after hitting market

Posted: Published on November 20th, 2012

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - You read the directions carefully and then take the pills... and expect them to work; every year, more than 10,000 Canadians die from taking prescription drugs exactly as they were prescribed. From heartburn pills that cause heart attacks to anti-depressants that lead to suicide, Maclean's magazine is spotlighting drug side effects and dangers that are often identified only after they come to market. "It's a complicated issue. There are dangers associated with prescription drugs that we're not talking about and our regulatory system is not necessarily equipped to communicate those dangers to us," says Ann Kingston, a senior writer with Maclean's. In 2000, Conservative MP Terrence Young's daughter collapsed died of heart failure while taking an acid reflux drug that has since been pulled from the market. "Nobody thought there was any problem with [the drug] but as Mr. Young investigated after the death, he learned that there were huge dangers associated with it and that Health Canada knew about them and warned doctors. But the mechanism for warning doctors is not always effective in that doctors are swamped; they're not up to date on what's going on with drugs," says Kingston. "As a result, there were … Continue reading

Hepatitis C treatment's side effects can now be studied in the lab

Posted: Published on November 18th, 2012

ScienceDaily (Nov. 16, 2012) The adverse side effects of certain hepatitis C medications can now be replicated and observed in Petri dishes and test tubes, thanks to a research team led by Craig Cameron, the Paul Berg Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Penn State University. "The new method not only will help us to understand the recent failures of hepatitis C antiviral drugs in some patients in clinical trials," said Cameron. "It also could help to identify medications that eliminate all adverse effects." The team's findings, published in the current issue of the journal PLOS Pathogens, may help pave the way toward the development of safer and more-effective treatments for hepatitis C, as well as other pathogens such as SARS and West Nile virus. First author Jamie Arnold, a research associate in Cameron's lab at Penn State, explained that the hepatitis C virus (HCV), which affects over 170,000,000 people worldwide, is the leading cause of liver disease and, although antiviral treatments are effective in many patients, they cause serious side effects in others. "Many antiviral medications for treating HCV are chemical analogs for the building blocks of RNA that are used to assemble new copies of the virus's … Continue reading

Transvaginal Mesh Side Effects Spur More Lawsuits

Resource4thePeople attorneys outline dangerous transvaginal mesh side effects. (PRWEB) November 16, 2012 The lawyers at Resource4thePeople want these women to know that these side effects have been reported in such increasing numbers to the FDA that the agency has issued warnings about these problems to physicians and patients. This report and warning are contained in a July 13, 2011 health alert: http://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/Safety/AlertsandNotices/ucm262435.htm (See highlights below.) Our team of transvaginal mesh lawyers point out that there has been a long history of devastating side effects associated with transvaginal mesh and that various models have been the subject of recalls and significant numbers of transvaginal mesh lawsuits. The volume of these lawsuits has caused the federal court system to consolidate them into groups of what are called multi-district litigations that are overseen by judges for pre-trial evidence-gathering. (U.S. District Court, Southern District of West Virginia: MDL2325, MDL2326 and MDL2327.) These side effects, which were documented in the July 13, 2011 health alert issued by the FDA, are now contained in transvaginal mesh lawsuits that will have to be proven in court. Women who have suffered these problems are being advised by Resource4thePeople to report them to their physicians and to take steps to … Continue reading

Limited Pradaxa Recall Issued over Effectiveness Concerns

Posted: Published on November 16th, 2012

The Pradaxa Resource Center is the Webs largest source for information on Pradaxa legal news, research and side effects. Visit http://www.Pradaxa-lawsuits.org. (PRWEB) November 15, 2012 The report comes as The Journal for The American Medical Association warned in September that the FDA may have rushed approval of Pradaxa, overlooking key Pradaxa side effects like internal bleeding. The FDA warned on December 7, 2011 that it was investigating Pradaxa after receiving more injury or death reports than expected. Anyone affected by internal bleeding after taking Pradaxa is urged to speak with a lawyer about their legal options as soon as possible. While all anticoagulants can cause internal bleeding, the Journal of Neurosurgery reported doctors concerns on March 6, 2012 that, once Pradaxa causes internal bleeding, there is little they can do to stop it. Judge Herndon previously issued an order on July 24, 2012 that those injured by Pradaxa can proceed with lawsuits. Due to the number of Pradaxa lawsuits expected, a central court was recently established in Illinois to handle the claims. The case is known as MDL No. 2385, IN RE: Pradaxa Product Liability Litigation, Southern District of Illinois. A report issued by the Institute for Safe Medicine Practices … Continue reading

"Drug Trailer" Teaches Students to Stay Off Drugs

Posted: Published on November 14th, 2012

Students at Warren Central High School got a first-hand look at the side effects of drugs Tuesday. Kentucky State Police set-up their Substance Abuse Information Center to show students what different drugs look like, and what they can do to people. The Drug Trailer is an interactive, hands-on learning center on wheels. "Some of the drugs in there, I really never have seen of, or heard of before, so it was really new to me in there," say Raymond Smith, Warren Central Senior. "We think it's important not only for our students, but also for our staff to have an opportunity to see firsthand the different types of drugs, the dangers of drugs, and how important it is to stay away from drugs," says Nancy Booth with the Warren Central Youth Service Center. The Substance Abuse Information Center stops at different schools to teach kids about drugs, so they can stay off drugs.
