Dilantin labels show serious side effects

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2013

Contributor (866) 529-2400 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on March 6 approved Pfizers new labeling for the antiepileptic drug Dilantin (phenytoin). One change added several drugs to the list of those that may decrease phenytoin levels. Nevertheless, significant labeling remains intact. Although Dilantin has been FDA-approved since the mid-1950s, a couple of increased risks noted on Dilantins 21st century labeling have not changed. One pertains to the drugs fetal effect and it reads, If you take Dilantin during pregnancy, your baby is at risk for serious birth defects. Infant breast feeding is not recommended for women taking this drug because phenytoin appears to be secreted in low concentrations in human milk. Expounding on this warning, The babies of women taking phenytoin have a greater than usual number of major birth defects like cleft lip, cleft palate, and heart malformations, according to the Epilepsy Foundations Epilepsy Therapy Project. If they become pregnant, Dilantin patients should be encouraged by their physicians to enroll in the North American Antiepileptic Drug Pregnancy Registry, according to labeling in effect since 2009. The registry provides information on the effects of in-utero exposure to Dilantin, and it collects information about the safety of antiepileptic drugs during … Continue reading

The Effects of Strange Side Effects

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2013

Posted by Clay RossiApril 23, 2013 7:30 AM The Atlantic magazine has written a very interesting piece on a Tylenol study that raises many more questions than it answers. It seems that acetaminophen is not only an effective pain reliever but also has subtle cognitive effects on those who take the drug which altered the way subjects passed moral judgments. What does this mean? It seems that acetaminophen takes the edge off of peoples anxiety. While this can generally be viewed as a positive, one of the studies raised novel legal issues. One of the ways in which the study was carried out was by testing how high Tylenol users set bond for a fictional prostitute against a control group who did not take acetaminophen. Those who were acetaminophen users set lower bail numbers which was alleged to be a function of their sense of moral judgment [being] blunted. (Perhaps even more telling the acetaminophen users seemed not to be so bothered by creepy, surrealistic David Lynch films.) If the claims about acetaminophen having a cognitive effect prove true, whether a potential juror is taking the drug would seem to be a necessary inquiry during voir dire. Theoretically, jurors who … Continue reading

Marijuana Pill May Be Better for Pain

Posted: Published on April 23rd, 2013

A pill form of marijuana may work just as well to relieve pain as the smoked form, but with fewer side effects, new research suggests. In the study, people who either smoked marijuana or took the drug dronabinol a pill that contains the active ingredient of marijuana were able to hold their hands in a bath of ice water (showing that they could tolerate the pain of the cold temperature) for longer than participants who took a placebo. What's more, the pain-reducing effect of dronabinol lasted longer than that of smoking marijuana, the researchers said. While smoking the drug decreased pain sensitivity for about 2.5, the pill continued to have pain-reducing effects for about 4.5 hours. However, analgesic effects of the pill took about an hour to kick in, compared with about 15 minutes for smoking marijuana. Medical marijuana is legal in 18 states, and studies have suggested that smoking the drug relieves pain. For instance, a 2010 study found that smoking marijuana eased pain from nerve injuries. However, "smoking anything presents certain health risks," said study researcher Ziva Cooper, an assistant professor of clinical neurobiology at Columbia University's Department of Psychiatry. Substances in the smoke can reduce lung function … Continue reading

By Jerome Burne PUBLISHED: 18:50 EST, 22 April 2013 | UPDATED: 01:41 EST, 23 April 2013 There has been increasing concern that drug companies have not provided the full picture about new medicines Several years ago, Anne-Marie Cook, a 40-year-old health care assistant from Surrey, was prescribed the antidepressant Seroxat after shed become anxious and withdrawn following the death of her father. Within a few months she began to feel better and started going out with friends again. Sensibly, she checked the drug information leaflet to make sure it was all right to have alcohol while on the medication. There is no known interaction between Seroxat and alcohol, it read. But this isnt the whole story, as Anne-Marie learned to her cost. In rare cases, there is an interaction. She had no idea of it at the time, but with hindsight it explains her changed behaviour. After just a couple of drinks I started to become verbally aggressive and reckless, says Anne-Marie (not her real name). Once I started drinking I found it hard to stop. I also found I was becoming confused after drinking alcohol. I got banned from restaurants and bars in my local town and became an … Continue reading

Sarcoma Alliance Examines Failure of Promising New Drug

Posted: Published on April 20th, 2013

Sarcoma specialists mourn the loss of palifosfamide, which might have improved the quality of life for their patients. Atlanta, Ga. (PRWEB) April 18, 2013 In a news release, Ziopharm reported that palifosfamide, in combination with doxorubicin, didn't show any significant difference from doxorubicin alone in a phase 3 clinical trial called PICASSO. In further statements, the company said FDA approval for sarcoma now appeared impossible. "It is such a shame that a great drug will not be approved," said Dr. D'Amato, a sarcoma medical oncologist at Georgia Cancer Specialists in Atlanta. Sarcoma patients have gotten the chemotherapy drug ifosfamide for years, often combined with doxorubicin (also known by its brand name Adriamycin). Palifosfamide was developed to be as effective as ifosfamide, but not as toxic, Dr. D'Amato said. In the randomized PICASSO trial, doctors didn't know if they were giving patients palifosfamide or a placebo, said Charles Forscher, MD, medical director of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center's sarcoma program in Los Angeles. Sometimes side effects give clues as to which patients are getting which drugs. But palifosfamide caused so few side effects that doctors couldn't tell which patients got the drug and which got saline injections, said Scott Schuetze, MD, PhD, director … Continue reading

dOliveira & Associates releases a new infographic providing FDA warnings regarding alleged male breast growth, prostate cancer, and long-term sexual side effects that are associated with the drugs containing Finasteride. (PRWEB) April 19, 2013 Proscar and Propecia, approved by the FDA in 1992 and 1997 respectively, were quickly put on sale by Merck to an eager market. Since the approval of these two drugs, the FDA has added new warnings to the Propecia and Proscar labels and in June of 2011, the FDA revised the information to include a possible increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer. The FDA based its decision on two medical studies, the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial (PCPT) and Reduction by Dutasteride of Prostate Cancer Events (REDUCE) (ii). Additional changes were made in April of 2012 to Propecia and Proscar when the FDA added warnings of lasting sexual side effects even after discontinuation of the drugs. After the FDA investigated 421 adverse event reports for Propecia and 199 reports for Proscar, the agency found 59 cases where sexual side effects had persisted for three months following discontinuation (iii). The Propecia and Proscar infographic lists possible side effects that have been associated with these drugs. Those side effects … Continue reading

Drug safety experts disagree over whether the blood thinner Pradaxa has higher risks of internal bleeding than traditional anticoagulants. The FDA has updated its information to state the drug is as safe as warfarin*. However, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices recently ranked blood thinners like Pradaxa among the most dangerous drugs available and warned that Pradaxa bleeding is nearly 5 times as likely to result in death than bleeding from warfarin**.
