Drugs and alcohol impaired King's student's judgement – Coroner
Posted: Published on May 29th, 2012
A mixture of drugs and alcohol impaired a Kings College boys judgement after he was told he was at risk of being expelled, a coroner has found. David Gaynor, 17, died after falling from a motorway overbridge at Greenlane in Auckland on June 11 last year. Chief Coroner Neil MacLean said toxicology reports showed David was well over the drink driving limit and had taken the Class C "party drug" 4-MEC and possibly also cannabis. After drinking at two pre-ball events, David was admitted to the ball but was later taken to a "time out" room after a security guard saw him in the female toilets. He was not known to have any mental health or anxiety issues. David and his father Brian Gaynor, who was called to collect him, were told disciplinary action would be taken at the school. Mr Gaynor said he was "upset and angry" during the trip home and that the situation was a major disappointment to him, the report said. David expressed thoughts about death, getting expelled and that he was going to jump off a bridge in subsequent texts to friends. Mr Gaynor said his own research suggested 4-MEC shouldn't be mixed with alcohol, … Continue reading

Drugs, alcohol contributed to teen's death – Coroner
Posted: Published on May 29th, 2012
Published: 5:27AM Wednesday May 30, 2012 Source: ONE News David Gaynor - Source: Supplied Illegal drugs and alcohol were a significant contributing factor in the death of an Auckland teenager, according to a Coroner's report. King's College student David Gaynor died from traumatic head injuries after he leapt from a motorway overbridge in central Auckland following his school ball last year. A Coroner's report into the 17-year-old's death found Gaynor knew the likely consequences of his impulsive actions when he committed suicide even though he was "clearly affected by the combination of substances he had ingested". The toxicology report found David had a blood alcohol level of 32 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood as well as traces of two illegal drugs, party stimulant "4-MEC" and possible traces of cannabis. David had two blue pills with him at the time of the death containing the chemical 4-MEC, an amphetamine-like stimulant found in illegal party drugs such as ecstasy, which gives users a sense of short-lived euphoria. The Coroner also found David's state of mind was likely affected by the disciplinary action he was to face at school after being discovered near the female toilets at the ball "not in his … Continue reading

Cops: Drugs, strip club workers, sex costumes found in Townie bust
Posted: Published on May 26th, 2012
Cops found sex costumes, drugs and three Centerfolds strip club workers at an after-hours house party in Charlestown yesterday. Community complaints led cops to investigate the Cambridge Street home where neighbors told police they suspected drug activity and possibly prostitution. Officers executing a search warrant early yesterday found several people in various levels and forms of undress, police said. Police confiscated drugs, cash, scales, syringes, baggies and other items. Police also found sex-themed instruments and costumes at the house, they said. Three people inside the house were employees of Centerfolds strip club, and one is believed to be linked to an escort service ad, police said. An investigation into possible prostitution and sexual exploitation is ongoing, according to police. A flyer found in the house advertised it as an after-hours party spot, charging $5 admission, police said. Police charged Cortney Bergstom, 25, of Woburn with possession of class A and class B drugs; James Imbert, 25, of Boston with possession of a class B drug and possession with intent to distribute class B drugs; Marcus Smith, 19, and Luis Viaud, 22, both of Boston, were both charged with possession with intent to distribute class B drugs and outstanding warrants for … Continue reading

Mexico election: Drugs war in spotlight

24 May 2012 Last updated at 22:46 ET By Will Grant BBC News, Michoacan Please turn on JavaScript. Media requires JavaScript to play. Rosa Isela Caballero Garcia, the wife of a Mexican journalist missing for more than five years, says not knowing if he is dead or alive is like "physical torture" There is an area of western Mexico called Tierra Caliente. The name is a reference to the soporific and oppressive heat in the region. But in this part of the world, caliente can also mean "dangerous" as well as "hot". Unfortunately, for many residents in the state of Michoacan, "Dangerous Land" is an all-too-accurate description of their towns and villages. It was here that the government declared war on the drug cartels. In December 2006, barely a week after taking office, President Felipe Calderon ordered 6,500 troops into his home state to restore order after a surge in drug-related killings. Many had expected the army's deployment to be temporary. Fast-forward almost six years, and the soldiers are still there, fighting drug traffickers on the Pacific coast and in the mountains. In fact, there are more than ever. Follow this link: Mexico election: Drugs war in spotlight … Continue reading

Drugs can clear congestion without punishing prostate
Posted: Published on May 25th, 2012
Q. I control my symptoms of enlarged prostate with medication. The trouble with prostate problems is that you can't take decongestants with a cold, because they can make it hard to urinate. I usually rely on a vaporizer when I catch a cold, but with the last one I had horrible chest congestion. In desperation, I took Mucinex DM for the congestion, and then realized that I might be in for difficulties urinating. To my great surprise, I was able to urinate normally. In addition, I found that it opened my nasal passages. I'm so glad to have found something I can use for a cold. A. Decongestants can indeed cause urinary difficulty for men with enlarged prostates. Mucinex DM contains the expectorant guaifenesin and the cough suppressant dextromethorphan. These compounds are unlikely to cause prostate problems. Q. My wife took Lipitor to lower her cholesterol. When her legs began to hurt, she quit taking it. She still couldn't ride the mower, one of her pleasures. She was diagnosed with ALS and passed away less than a year later. I lost the most precious person in my life after 31 years of marriage. I am convinced that the drug she … Continue reading

Drugs likely involved in kidnappings – cops
Posted: Published on May 25th, 2012
POLICE believe drugs were behind a series of kidnappings in which alleged dealers drove their victims around Sydney at gunpoint forcing them to withdraw money. A couple alleged by police to be drug dealers in the local nightclub scene have been charged with three counts of kidnapping after a Sydney DJ and a couple were held hostage for several hours in two separate incidents. Police have found a "sophisticated replica" weapon which they believe was used in the alleged attacks. Police say the nightclub DJ was forced into the couple's vehicle in St Leonards last Friday and driven to several ATMs around the city. He was forced to hand over a large amount of cash before his friends noticed him missing and called the police. Police contacted the victim and he was released unharmed. During investigations into the kidnapping, police uncovered a second and third victim allegedly held by the pair in April. ``The partner of the victim was detained in what could be called a drug house in Surry Hills, whilst these transactions took place,'' Detective Superintendent Robert Critchlow told reporters in Sydney. Police say the couple were threatened and did not make any reports. They allege all three … Continue reading

A14 WASHINGTON The Senate overwhelmingly approved legislation Thursday that would allow Americans speedier access to generic drugs as well as breakthrough treatments for life-threatening diseases as part of a Food and Drug Administration revamping that now heads to theHouse. At the same time, the legislation would allow the FDA to create a breakthrough designation to speed the development of drugs that may demonstrate substantial improvement over existing therapies for those with serious or life-threateningillness. The Senate bill, approved by a 96-1 vote, also addresses a number of concerns about the safety and quality of importedmedicines. The legislation represents a major shift in how the government oversees the pharmaceutical industry. For more than 70 … Continue reading
