"Breakthrough therapy" could help treat eczema

Posted: Published on January 17th, 2015

About 30 million Americans suffer from eczema, a painful, itchy skin condition that can be hard to treat and miserable to live with. Now the Food and Drug Administration has fast-tracked testing of a promising new drug treatment that could offer patients new hope. Daniela Velasco is one of the patients taking part in testing the drug, called Dupilumab, at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, and she's amazed by the difference it has made. Velasco suffered from flare-ups so severe they kept her awake at night. Now she says her skin looks healthy for the first time in four years. "It was such a quick change, so dramatic," she told CBS News. "Like from being extremely miserable to like, 'Whoa, this is what it feels like to be normal again!'" The itchy, red patches on her legs cleared up within 10 days. Doctors say 85 percent of the patients taking the drug in the study experienced similar results. Dupilumab, which is administered by injection, was developed by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Sanofi. It was recently designated a "Breakthrough Therapy" by the FDA to accelerate the testing process and speed its way towards approval. The drug was developed based … Continue reading

Eczema woes not just skin deep

Posted: Published on January 15th, 2015

Skin disease takes emotional toll like chronic pain Hard to exercise because sweat triggers itch Diabetes, high blood pressure and insomnia add to eczema health woes Physicians need to treat cardiovascular risks as well as the itch CHICAGO --- Eczema wreaks havoc on its sufferers' lives with health problems that are more than skin deep. Adults who have eczema -- a chronic itchy skin disease that often starts in childhood -- have higher rates of smoking, drinking alcoholic beverages and obesity and are less likely to exercise than adults who don't have the disease, reports a new Northwestern Medicine study. These behaviors give them a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure and high cholesterol as well as diabetes. They also have higher rates of insomnia. About 10 percent of adults in the U.S. have eczema. "This disease takes a huge emotional toll on its sufferers, like chronic pain," said lead study author Dr. Jonathan Silverberg. "Because eczema often starts in early childhood, people are affected all through their developmental years and adolescence. It hurts their self-esteem and identity. That's part of why we see all these negative behaviors." Silverberg is an assistant professor of dermatology at Northwestern … Continue reading

Daily Shower May Be Bad for Your Skin; Docs Suggest 'Soak and Smear'

Posted: Published on January 14th, 2015

(TODAY) -- The blast of frigid air across the country is freezing our fingers and drying out our skin. Combine this weather with the American love of frequent showers and baths and youve got a recipe for itchy, parched skin, or aggravated conditions like dermatitis and eczema. Should we stop showering so much, as suggested by a Discovery News story, and embrace our stink? Not necessarily, say dermatologists. Its not so much how often you bathe, but how you bathe that matters. Forget about that all over-sudsing, suggests Dr. Casey Carlos, assistant professor of medicine in the division of dermatology at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. Its the hardest thing to get people to use soap only where they need it, Carlos told TODAY.com. Because soap is designed to remove oils from the skin, its drying. So Carlos suggests using it in armpits, the groin area, feet the potentially smelly places and skipping chest, back, legs, arms. People dont realize that the skin does a pretty good job of cleaning itself, Carlos said. Use lukewarm, not hot, water, and keep showers short. Then, as soon as you get out of the shower, moisturize, Carlos said. Some … Continue reading

Curing My Eyelid Eczema

Posted: Published on January 13th, 2015

Winter 2009/2010 was the first time in over half a decade that I was NOT affected (at all) by eyelid / face eczema. To me, this is the some of the best news ever! ((If you have ever had to deal with horrible eczema on your face, you know what I mean)) Follow my journey as I overcame the horrible experience of eyelid / face eczema. Please let me know your thoughts and experiences!! August 15, 2010 Posted by Mariana | Uncategorized | 8 Comments In my constant effort to stay away from all things cat-like, I have successfully maintained a 100% eczema-less face for the better part of the last 6 months. I have found that my immediate reaction to cats has mellowed out a bit, too I no longer flare up if the person next to me in line has cat hair on their coat. I can walk into a house that has cats, as long as I leave within 3-5 minutes and do not touch anything. I figure my body is no longer in crisis mode so it has become a bit more tolerant. Just a bit, though. I still refuse to go to a pet store … Continue reading

Prevent eczema, skin issues from arising in dry winter air

Posted: Published on January 12th, 2015

Picking up a travel-sized lotion to take on the go may not be a bad idea to help prevent skin issues from developing this winter. If you have chronic dry skin, you can develop different types of eczema during the winter ... that can flare with the dryer weather and when the dry heat that comes on, Krystle Kane, physicians assistant at Advanced Dermatology, Pottsville, said Wednesday. A specific type of eczema Kane talked about was atopic eczema. This type of eczema often runs in families who may have allergies, such as hay fever and asthma, but can also have sensitive skin and a history of eruptions called atopic dermatitis. While eczema can form at any age, this type is most common with infants and young adults, and improves before age 25, according to information provided by the Advanced Dermatology office. Over-washing hands to avoid germs can also lead to hand eczema, Kane said. A simple rash or patch of dry skin can turn into eczema over exposure to water or dry air, as well as different detergents, solvents, cleaning agents, chemicals, rubber gloves or ingredients in skin and personal care products. Common areas for eczema are behind the knees, … Continue reading
