Judge OKs Bradley Manning name change to Chelsea

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2014

YouTube Videos Tweets Comments Bradley Manning is the name of the soldier that was formally charged with leaking classified documents to WikiLeaks. Manning is currently in prison service a 35-year sentence for leaking the documents. Manning's given name is Bradley Edward Manning and he petitioned the court recently to change his name reports USA Today. The judge has now granted him permission to change his name to Chelsea Elizabeth Manning. Manning was unable to be in the court during the proceeding because he is serving his time at an Army prison in Fort Leavenworth Kansas. Manning stated it was an "exciting day." Reports indicate that the court hearing lasted about a minute. "Hopefully today's name change, while so meaningful to me personally, can also raise awareness of the fact that we (transgender) people exist everywhere in America today, and that we have must jump through hurdles every day just for being who we are," Manning said. The name change will compel the military to change Manning's records to reflect the new name. However, the military will not have to treat him like a woman or transfer him to a female prison. Manning has filed a grievance with the Disciplinary Barracks … Continue reading

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) April 19, 2014 As the body ages, metabolism slows, and countless symptoms of hormonal imbalance steadily reveal themselves. Men begin losing free testosterone in the body beginning around age 30, and at a rate of about 2% per year thereafter. The signs of low testosterone are feeling excessively fatigued, weaker, depressed, and lower sex drive. Women also experience hormonal imbalances as they age, the main hormonal plunge occurring at menopause. Symptoms of menopause can be sleeplessness, hot flashes, mood swings, memory problems, and much more. A great new way to treat these hormonal imbalances is via hormone replacement therapy. The Diet Doc system allows interested clients to order simple test kits, collect saliva or blood spot samples at home, send in samples, and review results and discuss treatment options with a licensed Diet Doc doctor. Diet Doc only utilizes bio-identical hormone replacement options when administering their unique therapy. Synthetic hormone replacement treatments have been found less effective, and may actually be detrimental to the patients wellbeing. Studies have shown that patients report greater satisfaction with HRTs that contain progesterone compared with those that contain a synthetic progestin. Bio-identical hormones have some distinctly different, potentially opposite, physiological effects … Continue reading

Study: Testosterone therapy can damage brain health in Caucasian men

Posted: Published on April 9th, 2014

FORT WORTH, Texas, April 8, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Ads touting testosterone replacement therapy are ubiquitous on radio and television. But medical research has determined that its success at enhancing libido may come at a price. Researchers at University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth report that while testosterone replacement therapy can damage brain health in some Caucasian men, Mexican-Americans appear to be protected from negative effects of the sex hormone. In Caucasian men with elevated oxidative stress, testosterone replacement therapy raises the risk of damage to brain cells, said Rebecca Cunningham, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and Neuroscience. But that's not the case for Mexican-Americans, who do not appear to be affected by oxidative stress. The findings, published in the April issue of the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, could lead to a better understanding of the role ethnicity plays in brain diseases and cognition. "Different factors appear to drive dementia," Cunningham said. "And these factors are dependent on the ethnicity of the person." Oxidative stress, which can determine whether testosterone protects brains cells or damages them, occurs when there are more free radicals produced in the body than antioxidants. Many studies have found between 20 percent and … Continue reading

HRT no longer a dirty term

Posted: Published on April 8th, 2014

It is hard to understand a woman who had a double mastectomy more than 10 years ago and hear her sing the praises of estrogen. This important female hormone, whose production declines with age, is linked to breast cancer. Its especially shocking to know that this particular woman, Dr. Melanie Bone, specializes in womens health issues and talks herself silly trying to remove the fear factor from her patients. Bone, who is now affiliated with JFK Medical Center in Atlantis, recently moved into the former office of Island Medical Care. She considers educating women on hormone replacement a top priority. A big part of what I do is to convince people they shouldnt be so scared of estrogen, she said. I am a big fan of estrogen. Many women are scared of hormone-replacement therapy. Thats especially true for older women, who recall all too clearly the loud debate that ensued about whether so-called HRT helped or harmed post-menopausal women. Today, HRT is no longer a dirty term. But it comes with a huge warning sign on the U.S. governments website, MedlinePlus: Hormone-replacement therapy may increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, breast cancer, and blood clots in the lungs and … Continue reading

As testosterone use grows, questions on risks await answers

Posted: Published on April 6th, 2014

PHILADELPHIA -- A dozen years ago, a major federal study shattered the deeply held belief that menopausal hormone therapy was the key to keeping women of a certain age healthy, sexy and in good moods. By showing the therapy did more harm than good, the study shriveled up lucrative hormone sales and set off a wave of lawsuits. Flash forward. It looks, as Yogi Berra said, like deja vu all over again -- this time for men. Even as female hormone replacement was collapsing, male hormone replacement was catching on. This wasn't because of convincing evidence that boosting testosterone helps men fight the toll of aging. It was mostly driven by the introduction of convenient, rub-on testosterone products starting in 2000 and the selling of those products as an answer to low energy, low libido, low mood -- what marketers call "Low T." Now that the quintessential male steroid is a $2 billion market -- with nearly 3 percent of men over 40 estimated to be taking it in 2011 -- there are signs of trouble. Two recent studies suggest testosterone supplementation raises the risk of heart attack, stroke and death. The Food and Drug Administration has begun an investigation, … Continue reading
