Chelsea Manning petitions court for name change

Posted: Published on March 20th, 2014

Chelsea Manning, who last year announced her gender transition, has petitioned a Kansas court to legally recognize her chosen name, Chelsea Elizabeth Manning. Manning, who is currently serving a 35 year sentence for leaking classified documents to WikiLeaks, has also requested hormone replacement therapy, according to an announcement from her support network. In the face of military opposition, the American Civil Liberties Union plans to assist attorney David Coombs in advocating for Chelseas right to receive [hormone replacement therapy], according to the announcement. There is already precedent in federal courts establishing this right for transgender prisoners. We are confident that with adequate public and legal pressure, the military court and military prison system will follow suit. Military prisons do not provide hormone replacement therapy or other transition support because of a blanket ban on transgender service members. But, as Salon has previously noted, an expert commission has recently called on the Obama Administration to drop the policy prohibiting trans people from serving. The Williams Institute estimates that around 15,500 trans personnel are currently in the military, though, because of the prohibition on out trans service members, they have been forced to serve in secret. The commission concluded that facilitating trans … Continue reading

New Video Reveals HRC Medical Sales Tactics

Posted: Published on March 19th, 2014

by Jennifer Kraus Consumer Investigator NASHVILLE, Tenn.-- Hormone replacement therapy was a multimillion-dollar business for one Nashville company, but did high pressure sales tactics put patients at risk? We now have an inside look at the way HRC Medical tried to entice people to sign up for its lucrative and controversial program. The state shut down HRC for deceptive business practices after NewsChannel 5 Investigates raised questions about patients being overdosed on hormones at its Nashville clinic. Now, a training video produced by HRC Medical for its clinics around the country has surfaced. It was supposed to teach the company's salespeople how to get patients to commit to a year's worth of hormone therapy -- without undergoing a single medical test. Don Hale, one of the two founders of HRC Medical, appears in the nearly 12-minute video, explaining how HRC wants its salespeople to "close the deal." "What I'm going to try to do today is give you an outline of what to do in a consult and how we want it handled," Hale said in the video. The video was shown in court as part of the state's long running lawsuit against Don Hale and his brother Dan, who … Continue reading

Testosterone Therapy Treatment for Men and Hormone Replacement Therapy for Women

Posted: Published on March 15th, 2014

The FDA is currently investigating the risk of heart attack, stroke and death among individuals using a form of testosterone therapy treatment. The FDA made it clear that testosterone products are approved only for use in men who lack or have low testosterone levels in conjunction with an associated medical condition. Now, according to an article in the Herald Tribune, some critics find the testosterone therapy treatment trend [is] reminiscent of another hormonal regimen with a sexy allure, hormone replacement therapy in women. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) conducted a clinical trial to find the benefits and risks of the combination of estrogen and progestin in healthy menopausal women between the ages of 50 and 79 years old. The trial was a component of the Womens Health Initiative (WHI). Researchers wanted to find the effect of estrogen plus progestin on the prevention of heart disease and hip fractures, and any associated change in risk for breast and colon cancer. The study found an increase in risk for strokes, heart attacks, blood clots, breast cancer, and cardiovascular disease. It found a decrease in hip fractures, total fractures, and colorectal cancer. The trial was stopped early due to the … Continue reading

Hormone replacement therapy linked to potential reduction in risk of developing dementia

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2014

Published 12 March 2014 Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) given soon after menopause could help reduce the risk of developing dementia or mild cognitive impairment. This is according to a study published in the journal Plos One today (Wednesday 12 March). The study, led by Standford University School of Medicine, found that hormone therapy, initiated soon after menopause, prevented degeneration in key brain regions of women who were at heightened dementia risk. This heightened risk of developing dementia was defined by having a history of major depression, having a first-degree relative with the condition or having the Apo4 allele gene a gene variant known to greatly increase someone's risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. Of the 45 post-menopausal women who remained in the study, 28 remained on HRT and 17 stopped using it. Brain images taken at the outset and compared to two years later indicated that metabolic activity in the medial prefrontal cortex essential to decision making was better preserved among participants who remained on hormone therapy. Of the two HRT drugs taken by those in the study, estradiol in pure form and Premarin (a brand name part made up of estradiol), pure estradiol saw the largest effect in preserving metabolic … Continue reading

Grillo: hormone replacement therapy

Posted: Published on March 12th, 2014

By Larry Matson Grillo HealthInformation Center Q: I've used hormone replacement therapy for hot flashes, and now I'm considering staying on it because I feel better. However, I'm concerned about breast cancer. Is this concern justified? A: This question addresses the long-term use of hormone replacement therapy as a preventive health strategy for post-menopausal women. It's a different question than using hormones for menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes. The risks from short-term use are minimal, and the benefits are clear. The latest consensus statement (2013) from seven major international and U.S. societies working in women's health concluded that the benefits of hormone replacement therapy for treating moderate to severe symptoms outweigh the risks up to age 60 or 10 years post-menopause. What about after 60? This can be a wonderful time of life, but chronic conditions such as heart disease, breast cancer, fractures, and dementia can threaten the quality of life. Twenty years ago, hormone replacement therapy was widely considered beneficial for all of these conditions. Then, in 2002, the Women's Health Initiative, a massive National Institutes of Health-sponsored study of women's health issues, reported a significant increase in breast cancer in women using hormone replacement therapy. With this … Continue reading

California commission announces 'total ban' of testosterone-replacement therapy

Posted: Published on March 7th, 2014

The California State Athletic Commission is tightening its rules when it comes to therapeutic-use exemptions for testosterone-replacement therapy, and in the interim, has announced a total ban on TRT. Commission officials today announced the move, which comes one week after the influential Nevada State Athletic Commission issued a ban and set the dominoes in motion for other regulatory bodies to follow suit. According to todays statement, the commission will soon require World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) standards to receive a TRT exemption. In turn, the commission believes such guidelines will create an effective ban on the controversial steroid-hormone treatment. Until those rules are enacted, though, no TUEs will be granted in the state of California. California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer Andy Fosters statement: The California State Athletic Commission fully supports the Nevada State Athletic Commissions decision to eliminate Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUE) for Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) in boxing and mixed martial arts. California is a strong supporter of anti-doping efforts. As part of Californias anti-doping efforts, the Commission recently began the rulemaking process to require meeting World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) standards as the only way to obtain a TUE for TRT. This standard is so high that it is … Continue reading

Do you need testosterone?

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2014

Testosterone therapy has rapidly become a cornerstone of the emerging hormone replacement therapy market, seeing dramatic increases in the last decade. According to a 2013 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Internal Medicine, prescription of testosterone therapy has risen three fold. More and more men and even women are seeking testosterone replacement therapy to address aging woes, such as weight gain, muscle loss and low energy. The emerging trend has led drug manufacturers and health industry experts to push testosterone pellets, injections, pills, patches, gels and creams of varying quality on an unsuspecting public. Just as the Womens Health Initiative (WHI) raised fears over hormone replacement therapy among women, a new study from the Journal of the American Medical Association has men reconsidering the cost of their virility. But, much like the WHI scare, the trouble is not testosterone therapy itself; it is the expertise with which it is administered and the quality of the product and delivery method. Failure to get adequate testing and not seeking certified medical experts in hormone therapy can result in a very rocky path when it comes to hormone management. Hot trends, like the current mass appeal of testosterone therapy, … Continue reading
