Hormone replacement therapy not linked to memory woes in postmenopausal women
Posted: Published on June 26th, 2013
Women taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) following menopause won't suffer memory problems or declines in their cognitive abilities, according to a new study. Researchers tracked more than 1,300 women who had been given hormone medications called conjugated equine estrogens (CEEs). The treatment consists of a synthetic mixture of estrogen, or female sex hormones, and is used to treat symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes and vaginal dryness. Hormone replacement therapy may also help stave off bone loss for older women. But, previous research of women over 65 has linked the medication to cognitive deficits like memory loss and a two-fold risk increase for dementia. For the new study, researchers randomized postmenopausal women between the ages of 50 and 55 to either receiving hormone therapy or placebo. After seven years, the researchers followed up with the women, and determined no overall differences in cognitive function scores between women taking the CEEs and the placebos. The research suggests giving the hormones at an earlier age of menopause may be more beneficial than prescribing them later. "Our findings provide reassurance that CEE-based therapies when administered to women earlier in the postmenopausal period do not seem to convey long-term adverse consequences for cognitive function," … Continue reading

New study just adds to hormone replacement therapy debate
Posted: Published on June 26th, 2013
(CBS News) For the past decade, women who are post-menopausal have been getting conflicting information about hormone replacement therapy. Now, a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association is adding to the debate. The study of 1,326 women taking synthetic hormones over seven years found no risk to cognitive functions for women 50-55, and some cognitive decline for women 65 and older. Dr. Sue Decotiis, a hormone replacement specialist at the New York University Langone Medical Center, said the study used products that are old. She explained, "With this study, they were using conjugated equine estrogens, and what that means is they get that from the urine of a horse. ... They were started to be used in the 1940s, and I'm certainly no longer using them in my practice." She said she's "not really" a fan of this study because they used something other than natural human estrogen known as beta estradiol. "They're not using the right product," she said. "It's sort of using the wrong key to get in your apartment. You're not going to get in. You're not going to get the right answers. We have to use the hormones that our body relates … Continue reading

Hormone Drugs Don’t Harm Brain for Some Menopausal Women
Posted: Published on June 25th, 2013
Hormone therapy doesnt appear to have a harmful effect on cognitive function in younger postmenopausal women, according to a study that also showed the treatment didnt benefit the brain. Women 50 to 55 years old who were given estrogen or estrogen plus progestin had similar scores on tests of memory and other mental processes as those taking a placebo, according to research published yesterday in JAMA Internal Medicine. An earlier study in women ages 65 and older linked the hormone treatments to cognitive decline and dementia, the authors said. The new findings show that taking the therapies for a short time earlier in menopause to treat symptoms doesnt harm the brain, said Mark Espeland, the lead study author. These findings are still not definitive but they are certainly the best evidence yet that the negative effects on the brain of hormone therapy in older women do not extend to younger women, said Francine Grodstein, an associate professor of medicine at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston who wrote an accompanying editorial in the journal. Hormone therapy remains one of the best treatments for menopausal symptoms. Menopausal women take hormone treatments to relieve hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal symptoms. The … Continue reading

New Data Highlight Use of Tirosint® (levothyroxine sodium) Capsules in Patients with T4 Malabsorption Due to Gastric …
Posted: Published on June 20th, 2013
CRANFORD, N.J., June 20, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Akrimax Pharmaceuticals, LLC, a privately-held, innovative specialty pharmaceutical company, today announced data that show a lower dose of Tirosint (levothyroxine sodium) capsules is required as compared with standard T4 tablets for hypothyroidism patients with impaired gastric acid secretion to reach their target thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels. The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologist (AACE) Guidelines for Clinical Practice for Evaluation and Treatment of Hypothyroidism call for physicians to treat hypothyroidism with oral levothyroxine replacement therapy. Careful dose titration and monitoring is necessary in order to maintain a euthyroid state, while avoiding adverse events due to overtreatment.1 TSH levels in patients receiving levothyroxine should be no more than 4.0 mU/L.2 Azeez Farooki, MD, Assistant Attending Physician, Endocrinology Service, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, said, "Dose titration can be cumbersome for patients with hypothyroidism who suffer from gastrointestinal disorders like H.pylori infection, lactose intolerance or celiac disease. These patients often require higher doses of T4 due to malabsorption issues. Such patients may endure frequent dose changing and lab tests, which is less than ideal. These data are encouraging because they suggest that, in many patients with malabsorptive disorders, Tirosint improves upon the absorption of traditional levothyroxine (T4) tablets." … Continue reading

Women’s health: Women in their 50s face changes, choices like hormone therapy
Posted: Published on June 20th, 2013
For women in their 50s, lower estrogen levels lead to menopause and a whole set of health concerns. "This is the beginning of the aging process," says Kate Beadle, a Kaiser Permanente nurse practitioner who specializes in menopause. Dr. Audrey Curtis, who's helping start a women's health clinic at Legacy Meridian Park, says: "A lot of women feel like they're on a roller coaster. Their hormone levels are doing what they did in the teenage years, really up and down." For some women, the answer is hormone replacement therapy to deal with symptoms of menopause. But the 50-year history of HRT has been as wild as the mood swings it is supposed to prevent. And the changing recommendations for women, as well as cancer fears, have led to confusion and stress. Introduced in the 1960s, long-term estrogen treatment was marketed as a wonder therapy to combat aging, disease and depression. Two 1975 studies indicating increased cancer risk made a temporary dent in sales, but it didn't last as other hormones like progestin were added to the therapy, supposedly eliminating the added cancer risk. In 2002, a major study by the federal Women's Health Initiative made a much bigger impression, linking … Continue reading
