Pharma fraudster in Miami jail

The Winnipeg man credited with creating Canadas Internet pharmacy industry is behind bars in Miami, accused in a scheme involving the sale of phony and misbranded medication to unsuspecting customers. Andrew Strempler, 38, appeared in federal court Thursday, one day after authorities in Panama informed their American counterparts the man was being deported, a spokesman for the U.S. Marshals said. He was wanted on a federal warrant on three charges one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud, along with two counts of mail fraud. An indictment outlining the allegations was filed in the United States District Court in Miami in June, 2011. Strempler ran RxNorth, which also operated Mediplan Global Health, an Internet, mail and telephone pharmacy out of Minnedosa. But he had another prescription facility, known as the Personal Touch Pharmacy, in the Bahamas, where its alleged he filled drug orders but used labels stating the products were handled by RxNorth in Canada, the indictment states. Some of the packages contained misbranded and counterfeit drugs, the indictment reads. Drug scam US authorities arrested Andrew Strempler, 38, a pioneer of the Canadian Internet pharmacy industry, on charges related to the sale of foreign and counterfeit medicines. The Wall Street Journal says 38-year-old Andrew Strempler appeared Thursday in a federal court in Miami. It says he could face up to 20 years in prison for each of the three charges against him, as well as a forfeiture of $95 million. A Miami Federal court clerk said Friday Strempler had been charged with one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud, as well as two counts of mail fraud. The charges date from a period from January 2005 to June 2006, said the clerk. The Journal quotes a court clerk as saying that Strempler is expected to be arraigned next week. Strempler is an online pioneer who once ran the Manitoba-based online pharmacy, RxNorth. He later moved business to an island off the coast of Venezuela, called PharmaCheck. ALLIANCE UPDATE: Hostage excapes; one body found; two police shot

LATEST UPDATE, 6:37 p.m.: The hostage has escaped from Thiele Pharmacy in Alliance. Ray Hielscher, who was locked down in a nearby Radio Shack, said he saw the hostage run out of the pharmacy. Hielscher said he heard gunfire as the man ran out. He said the man grabbed his arm. At least he's safe, he said. As of about 6:30 p.m.CST, Hielscher said, the shooter was still barricaded in the pharmacy. The standoff at the pharmacy was preceded by an earlier slaying, local authorities say. Witnesses say a tank-like vehicle is moving into position in downtown Alliance, and the Chamber of Commerce has been evacuated. UPDATE: A second law enforcement officer, a trooper with the Nebraska State Patrol SWAT team, was shot while trying to get into position, according to the newspaper. The patrol said the trooper is expected to survive. An attempted burglary of a western Nebraska pharmacy this morning turned into a hostage situation that closed downtown Alliance and sent a police officer to a hospital with a gunshot wound. '.Apple,' '.auto' among Internet suffixes proposed

By ANICK JESDANUN AP Technology Writer NEW YORK (AP) - Proposals for Internet addresses ending in ".pizza," ''.space" and ".auto" are among the nearly 2,000 submitted as part of the largest expansion in the online address system. Apple Inc., Sony Corp. and American Express Co. are among companies that are seeking names with their brands. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers announced the proposals for Internet suffixes, the ".com" part of an Internet address, in London on Wednesday. There were 1,930 proposals for 1,409 different suffixes. The bulk came from North America and Europe. If approved, the new suffixes would rival ".com" and about 300 others now in use. Companies would be able to create separate websites and separate addresses for each of their products and brands, even as they keep their existing ".com" name. Businesses that joined the Internet late, and found desirable ".com" names taken, would have alternatives. From a technical standpoint, the names let Internet-connected computers know where to send email and locate websites. But they've come to mean much more.
