Pharmacists warn against counterfeit meds sold online

Posted: Published on May 31st, 2012

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) --A shortage of some prescription drugs or just the cost of medicine is driving more people to the Internet. They're counting on online pharmacies to deliver the pills they need. But you may not be getting what you paid for and it could be dangerous to your health. Dixie Wallace picked up her prescription from the Hy-Vee pharmacy. Wallacesays she's comfortable knowing exactly where it came from and would never buy her pills online. "The pharmacist checks everything and double checks. I would be very skeptical of that coming from India or wherever," said Wallace. Experts say Wallace is right to be skeptical. "Pretty much any name brand medication can have a counterfeit," said Hy-Vee pharmacist Jason Tipton. Pharmacists say some of the more popular counterfeit medications are Viagra and Adderall. Drug manufacturers now use holographic seals for consumers to know the difference between what is real and fake. FDA lab tests recently found counterfeit Adderall with the wrong active ingredient, containing pain medicine instead. But some counterfeits can contain more harmful substances. Owner:Attempted thieves made holes

Posted: Published on May 29th, 2012

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - A couple of would-be burglars got creative when they tried to break through a cinder block wall of a Chesapeake pharmacy. It isn't the first time someone has broken into Irwin's Pharmacy on Indian River Road. Owner Larry Barlow says it happens about once a year. This latest attempt, he told WAVY.com, shows the bad guys are getting smarter but are just not smart enough. "They've cut the telephone lines, I guess for the purpose of disabling the security alarm," Barlow said. He showed WAVY.com where someone broke through two cinder blocks, presumably using a sledge hammer. "Apparently one got in through there and realized he was stuck, couldn't get in any farther so he came back out." Barlow went on to say police were waiting because when they cut the phone line, an internet back up line immediately notified police. Even if they had gotten in, Barlow said they wouldn't have gotten far. The holes they made led to a storage room and that room is secured from the rest of the store with locks and a heavy bar. Barlow told us police caught one of the guys and the other got away. Police have … Continue reading

Owens plans to open 9th pharmacy at former Blockbuster store

Posted: Published on May 26th, 2012

Independent pharmacies are no different from your neighborhood supermarket or dress shop. Whether it's the big-box discounter down the block or the Internet, it's tough to survive in today's retail environment. But Owens Healthcare has faced the challenge and is growing. The Redding-based company will open its ninth retail pharmacy this summer on Lake Boulevard just north of the Raley's-ShopKo shopping center. John Friesen, whose father, Royce, bought the pharmacy business more than 40 years ago, said Owens has grown from a tiny drugstore to a company that has found its mark. "We are what I would consider a niche," said Friesen, Owens' chief executive officer. "We are not small like a one-store operation, but we also are not a 5,000-store Walgreens. We are kind of in between." Over the past few years, Owens has opened new locations on Churn Creek Road, inside a former scooter shop across from Four Corners, and on Continental Street in downtown Redding. Royce Friesen bought Owens from founders Harold and Gertrude Owens in 1971. The business had two pharmacies in Redding and eight employees. Owens today has about 125 employees. With eight retail pharmacies, Friesen said that affords Owens buying clout to compete against … Continue reading

Text Message Prescription Reminders Significantly Improve Patient Adherence to Oral Diabetes Medication

Posted: Published on May 25th, 2012

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- A new study published in the May issue of Clinical Therapeutics shows that patients who participate in a text message prescription reminder program have significantly higher adherence to chronic oral medications than those in a control group. The study of 580 employer-sponsored and Medicare members of a national pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) found that patients receiving text message reminders had better medication adherence rates than those who did not 85 percent vs. 77 percent. The adherence rates for those taking chronic anti-diabetes medication were even higher 91 percent vs. 82 percent. Medication adherence is defined as the extent to which patients take their medications as instructed by a physician. This is the first large-scale study in the United States to examine if a text message program providing medication-specific reminders could increase adherence. Previous research has shown a similar positive impact; however, these studies were smaller in scope, often with fewer than 100 participants, and focused on homogenous patient groups, such as those who are being treated for the same disease. This research provides strong evidence that technology can play a vital role in improving medication adherence, even among older patients, said Brian K. Solow, M.D., chief medical … Continue reading

Bauder Pharmacy, a nearly century-old Des Moines fixture, is the subject of an administrative investigation after state officials found a shortage of almost 741,000 pain pills. Mark Graziano with a pan of the business's peppermint bars while at the Iowa State Fair in 2008. (Register file photo.) The Iowa Board of Pharmacy has filed 20 administrative charges against the pharmacy, 3802 Ingersoll Ave., Des Moines, and its owner and pharmacist, Mark Graziano, in connection with the missing hydrocodone tablets. The shortage was discovered by an inspection and audit, which included information from an automated reporting system maintained by the U.S. Department of Justice that monitors the flow of certain controlled substances. Graziano was not in the store Thursday, and a message left for him was not immediately returned. He acquired hydrocodone products for Bauder Pharmacy from 14 different drug wholesalers between 2008 and 2012, according to state documents. The pharmacy ordered and received 1,098,900 of the tablets between Jan. 1, 2008, and March 21 of this year and dispensed 358,012, according to prescription monitoring program records. Additionally, inspectors noted that shopper surveys had indicated numerous deficiencies ranging from mislabeling on prescription vials to expired registration of a technician at the … Continue reading

Waterville chief offers help for those dealing with pharmacy robberies

Posted: Published on May 9th, 2012

May 7 AMY CALDER Morning Sentinel WATERVILLE A rise in area pharmacy robberies has prompted police Chief Joseph Massey to host a workshop May 31 for pharmacists and others who dispense prescription drugs about what to do before, during and after a robbery. The event will be 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the City Council Chambers at The Center, at 93 Main St. Im becoming very concerned that one of those pharmacy robberies is going to lead to serious injury or death to pharmacy staff, customers or even the robber, Massey said Monday. Weve had three recent robberies that made me realize we needed to take a proactive approach to reduce robberies and the likelihood of some injuries during those robberies. Massey said hard narcotics are a powerful motivation for people to rob such facilities. Theyre not asking for anything else except these hard narcotics, he said. Theyre so focused that all they want is those drugs. Those wanting to register are asked to call Masseys executive assistant, Kathleen Kenney-Haley, at 680-4704, or e-mail her at kkenney@waterville-me.gov. The goal of the workshop is to help businesses develop policies and procedures to help reduce the likelihood of a robbery, as … Continue reading
