Warning: Men's natural sex supplements may not be

Posted: Published on May 31st, 2013

Sexual supplements marketed to men can be dangerous and may contain variants of prescription drugs, a new report finds. STORY HIGHLIGHTS Editor's note: Ian Kerner, a sexuality counselor and New York Times best-selling author, writes about sex and relationships for CNN Health. Read more from him on his website, GoodInBed. (CNN) -- Conventional wisdom tells us that natural remedies are simply gentler alternatives to prescription drugs like Viagra and Cialis, right? Not so fast, say experts. Not only are many dietary supplements marketed for erectile dysfunction and other male sexual problems ineffective, they may not even be "natural." In fact, a number of these supplements are adulterated with the very prescription drugs they claim to replace, according to a recent report published in a recent issue of JAMA Internal Medicine. The editorial by Dr. Pieter Cohen, an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, sheds light on this growing concern. Cohen cites several alarming incidents in which over-the-counter sexual enhancement supplements were found to contain other substances. For example, one study in Singapore found that 77% of so-called natural sex supplements on the market contained undeclared pharmaceutical drugs, often in higher-than-recommended doses. And in 2012, a supplement called Rock … Continue reading

Igniting woman's sexual desire is more than popping pill

Posted: Published on May 30th, 2013

Lori Brotto, psychologist, and one of the world's leading experts on sexual dysfunction and arousal disorders, has been married 12 years, has children aged eight, seven and three, and could be forgiven if - how to put this delicately? - she wasn't as ready to jump in the sack with her husband as she used to be. She did not say if that were the case, and I didn't ask. But all fires cool with time, even, presumably, for the director of the University of B.C.'s Sexual Health Laboratory. Those first years of intense sexual combustion fade to a slower burn for most of us. "It's normal," Brotto said. "That lustful desire that really lives within the novelty of a new relationship in mystery and romance does wane for both men and women over time." It wanes much more frequently, research shows, for women than it does for men. For some women, that lack of sexual desire is so great and so emotionally distressing it meets the clinical criteria for hypoactive sexual-desire disorder, or HSDD. "We're not talking about the normal waning of desire that happens over time," Brotto said. "We're talking about disorders that are clinically significant, that interfere … Continue reading

Heart Disease Accelerates Male Menopause

Posted: Published on May 29th, 2013

Heart failure accelerates the aging process and may bring on early andropausal syndrome -- male "menopause," Polish researchers say. Professor Ewa A. Jankowska of the Wroclaw Medical University in Poland said as men get older they are more likely to suffer from andropausal syndrome, also called menopause, or a deficiency in the male sex hormones such as testosterone. The symptoms of andropausal syndrome can be divided into three categories: sexual, psychological and somato-vegetative. Sexual symptoms include: erectile dysfunction, problems with libido, decrease in beard growth, feelings of "having passed the zenith of life;" psychological symptoms include feeling discouraged, depressed, irritable, anxious, nervous; and somato-vegetative include joint and muscle complaints, sweating, need for more sleep, sleep disturbances, weakness, exhaustion. "Andropausal syndrome leads to poor quality of life. We wanted to discover whether heart failure increases andropausal syndrome and whether additional androgen therapies could improve quality of life in heart failure patients," Jankowska said in a statement. The researchers compared the prevalence and the severity of andropausal symptoms among 232 men with systolic heart failure ages 40-80 and 362 age-matched healthy peers. The study found andropausal syndrome affected almost one-third of men with heart failure, regardless of their age group. In men … Continue reading

Heart failure accelerates male 'menopause'

Posted: Published on May 25th, 2013

May 25, 2013 Heart failure accelerates the aging process and brings on early andropausal syndrome (AS), according to research presented today at the Heart Failure Congress 2013. AS, also referred to as male 'menopause', was four times more common in men with heart failure. The Heart Failure Congress is the main annual meeting of the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology and is being held 25-28 May in Lisbon, Portugal (1). As men get older they are more likely to suffer from andropausal syndrome (AS), also called 'menopause', androgen deficiency in the aging male (ADAM), or late-onset hypogonadism. Men with AS have decreased levels of anabolic hormones, including testosterone, and it has been suggested that these hormone deficiencies are what cause the clinical symptoms. The symptoms of AS according to the Aging Male Symptom Rating Scale can be divided into three categories: sexual (erectile dysfunction, problems with libido, decrease in beard growth, feelings of 'having passed the zenith of life'), psychological (feeling discouraged, depressed, irritable, anxious, nervous), and somato-vegetative (joint and muscle complaints, sweating, need for more sleep, sleep disturbances, weakness, exhaustion). Heart failure increases with age. Deficiencies of anabolic hormones are common in men with systolic … Continue reading

Washington, May 25 (ANI): Heart failure accelerates the aging process and brings on early andropausal syndrome (AS), a new study has found. Heart failure increases with age. Deficiencies of anabolic hormones are common in men with systolic heart failure, leading to reduced exercise capacity, depression and poor prognosis. But until now the impact of heart failure on the prevalence of AS … Continue reading

Erectile dysfunction drugs sold as herbal medicine

Posted: Published on May 24th, 2013

An Auckland pharmacist who illegally sold erectile dysfunction drugs as "herbal medicine" has been jailed. Fadi Iskander, 32, was today sentenced to four months and two weeks in prison for a series of breaches of the Medicines Act related to the sales of the unapproved prescription medicines. Iskander was convicted and sentenced at the Auckland District court on 47 of 49 charges laid by the Ministry of Health. The charges related to a "wide variety" of breaches of the Medicines Act relating to offences prior to 2010, when Iskander operated a website selling the drugs for the treatment of male sexual dysfunction, according to the Ministry of Health. He was also found to have possessed medicines at two addresses without having a reasonable excuse to do so. The products he advertised and sold were manufactured without approval and represented as herbal, despite containing the prescription medicines Vardenafil and Phentolamine as active ingredients. Iskander ran the business separately from a pharmacy which went into receivership in February 2010. The Pharmacy Council has suspended Iskander's pharmacy practising certificate. The Medicines Act 1981 sets out the framework protecting the public from misuse of medicines by limiting prescription medicines to supply only on the … Continue reading

If It Doesn’t Make Us Nymphos, Female Viagra Will Save Monogamy

Posted: Published on May 23rd, 2013

The worlds first female arousal drug, Lybrido, could be on the market as soon as 2016, according to Daniel Bergners New York Times Magazine cover story, adapted from his forthcoming book, What Do Women Want? (itself based on an earlier Times mag story of the same name). Lybridos developers expect the FDA green light a larger set of trials soon, but the Times' early glimpse suggests the drug offers a more contradictory promise than its male equivalents. In fact, our tendency to refer to Lybrido as the female Viagra, for example, reflects a misconception, according to Bergner. Even though Lybrido was rushed into development thanks to the financial success of Viagra, works a lot like Viagra, and is, chemically speaking, half Viagra, a female-desire drug would be something else, he writes. It would reach into the psyche. Here, reaching into the psyche means turning up levels of impulsive, lustful dopamine and turning down levels of calming, inhibiting serotonin. (For "a sizable segment of the undesiring," the serotonin has been turned way up by libido-diminishing antidepressants.) One neednt reach into the psyche of men in order to cure sexual dysfunction, Bergner explains, because if you give a man an erection his … Continue reading
