A few years ago I was lucky enough to attend a conference in the beautiful city of Amsterdam. After getting up my name badge and picking through the obligatory bag of SWAG I spotted a handwritten note with my name on it. On closer inspection the note was from the conference organisers thanking me for attending and giving me a few tips on how I could get the most out of the event. Of course everyone had a hand written note, but the warm and fuzzy feeling it gave me for a few moments was worth the ticket price alone; it was a really nice welcome, and one Ive always remembered. The MARSformat for 2013 is a change from previous years. What we have done in the past is hold a monthly training throughout the year, said Pamela Wolfley, administrative assistant and one of the organizers of the MARS training at the medical center. These are topics that must be covered every year and we used to work them into monthly training sessions. For 2013, however, a four-day intensive training will take place, she said. All of the staff will participate and go through the training, she said. It will be available 24 hours a day from Feb. 7 through 8 a.m. Feb. 11. During that time the staff will complete the training as their schedule allows. This is the first time we have conducted the MARStraining in a condensed format. According to Wolfley, each department at the medical center was tasked with preparing certain topics for the training. Topics that will be covered range from abuse and fraud to emergency operations, blood born pathogens, fire safety, harassment, infection prevention and personal equipment safety. Star Valley was without the services of several varsity grapplers but will had enough to dispatch the Devils on senior night. After taking a 4-0 lead, Evanston fell behind as the Braves won the next five matches and a 27-4 team lead. The visitors won the last three matches to make the score stand at its final margin. The wrestlers will be in Lyman on Friday night to take on the Eagles in a renewed rivalry. The squad will be back in Uinta County next weekend for the 3A West Regionals at Mountain View. The Braves continue to be the team to beat as they downed two more conference foes on the home court this past weekend to move to (13-3) overall and (9-0) in the 3A West. Wyatt Shinaver paced the team with 22 points in a 63-50 victory over Powell while Dalton Passeys 13 third quarter points helped Star Valley sprint away in a 51-30 gem against Cody. I was happy, stated head coach Tony Saras. We got off to a little better start. We had been getting behind and weve been trying to get that thought process out of their minds. We started better than we have over the past few games. Against the Panthers, the Braves put together four quarters of at least 14 points as they turned a nine-point halftime advantage into a 17-point margin at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Powell had no answers for Shinaver who hit nine field goals and added five free throws. Passey finished with 14 points while Kohl Battleson hit a pair of three-pointers on his way to nine points. Dr. Frances Juanita Bybee went home to be with her Lord on Dec. 19, 2012 in Cheyenne. Frances was born in Zwolle, La., on July 5, 1930 to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ebarb. Frances led an extraordinary life of achievement and educational excellence. She was a career educator and a true leader in her field. She graduated high school at the age of 16, graduated college at the age of 19. She began her teaching career in a one room school house for children K thru 9. Frances married Air Force Lieutenant Gary A. Bybee, moved from her home town and began to raise her four boys. She worked as a classroom teacher in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Riverside, Calif., and in townships in New Mexico. She earned her Education Specialist Degree by going to night school while working a full time teaching job and taking care of her family. Frances earned her PhD from the University of New Mexico. Perhaps the New York Times said it best back in the spring of 1951 in regards to BYU sharpshooter Roland Minson. If there is a better player to play in the 14 years of this [NIT] Tournament, we havent seen him. Minson, a current resident of Star Valley and father to Geri Scherbel and David Minson will have his jersey retired on February 16 at the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah as the Cougars host Portland. With 61 years having passed since he took his last official shot for BYU, Minson was a bit shocked to hear the news. Ill say it was a surprise,he laughed. I told them they waited way too long. Ivegot so many posterity that Ill fill up the gym with my kids. Minson will be one of just four players to ever have their numbers retired by the university along with former team mate Mel Hutchins. It was inevitable for Mel, Minson added. We share the honor and its as it should be. He was maybe the most unselfish player I ever played with. The Braves took over sole possession of first place in the conference this weekend as they claimed a 47-32 win in Mountain View on Friday night and a 59-43 victory in Lyman on Saturday afternoon. I like what were doing right now, said head coach Tony Saras. Were shooting pretty well; looking for each other and dictating the tempo. In Mountain View, the offense was harder to come by than it has been in recent weeks, but the team still managed a 15-point win for their tenth victory on the season. It was a game where the Braves bench tallied 16 of the teams 27 first half points. Byron [Anderson], Tanner [Harris]; DJ [Sims], they played really well in that game and they do what we expect them to do which is score and contribute within the framework of our offense,Saras added. Our guys work hard and they make a difference in these games. Dalton Passey was the lone Brave in double figures with a game-high 13 to go with seven rebounds. By Dahl Erickson on Jan 29, 2013 in Afton, News Members of the Army National Guard which included valley residents and members of the 1041st welcomed their neighbors to the Lincoln County Fairgrounds last week to inform the public about the actions of their local unit. Sometimes people forget that were here and we want to remind them that we are a part of their community and wanted to reach out to them, said SFC Shawn Chaufty. Governors of each and every state act as Commander and Chief of their state or territorys National Guard. We can be called on during local emergencies or statewide emergencies. The National Guard had over 55,000 Army National Guard that aided with Superstorm Sandy. They are also a big part of fighting wildfires at times with chainsaws on their backs to go out and help save their community. Chaufty was promoted as part of the evening from staff sergeant to sergeant first class. He served in the Marine Corps for 17 years and he and his wife and two daughters now live in the area.
