By News Release on Feb 26, 2013 in News, Outdoors, Wyoming The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is wrapping up a successful wolf capturing and collaring effort conducted intermittently over the last six weeks in northwest Wyoming. The Game and Fish will capture and collar wolves in the Wolf Trophy Game Management Area annually to monitor population size and distribution in Wyoming, said Large Carnivore Section supervisor Mark Bruscino. Recent capture operations have been successful and since December, we have radio collared 16 wolves in the Jackson, Meeteetse, and Cody areas. We now have at least one radio-collared wolf in most major packs in Wyoming, Bruscino added. Information collected from radio-collared wolves is helpful in documenting the population status of a recovered wolf population and will help ensure the species remains biologically recovered and under state management authority in the future, Bruscino said. Radio collars allow biologists to more readily locate wolf packs, count adults and pups, and more accurately estimate the number and location of wolf packs and breeding pairs in Wyoming. The Braves had a terrific outing in Casper this year, racking up 233.0 team points but it wasnt quite enough as the defending champion Powell Panthers finished with 241.5 and closed the door with a head-to-head victory in the 195 pound championship. Star Valley had a slim chance to make a 19-point Panther lead evaporate in the finals, a lead which dwindled as the first five Powell finalists all lost their matches, some of them in outrageous fashion. The Braves had four individual champions overall out of their five finalists. After cutting the lead to 6.5 points, Zach Thompson defeated Jordan Semadeni via pin to bump the lead back to 12.5 and seal the repeat. Derrick Wolfley capped off a great Star Valley rally with a 2-1 victory over Worlands Casey Hernandez. Carbon Kennington works on an escape against Powells Andrew Feller. Kennington won the match 5-0 to win the 132 pounds title. The day started off with a tough loss and ended with one too. In between, Star Valleys wrestlers, looking for the schools first state title since 2007, had a pretty good day. Jake Thompson lost a controversial 8-7 decision to Landers Kyle Carey in the very first match of the day, relegating the sophomore to a long day of Saturday wrestle-backs. Ian Anderson (126), Carbon Kennington (132), Austin Hoopes (145), Kris Beech (160), Marshall Watkins (170), Jordan Semadeni (195), Derrick Wolfley (220) and Colton Trisler (285), all advanced to the semi-finals with Kennington, Beech, Watkins, Semadeni and Wolfley making the Saturday championship round. Hoopes lost a 4-3 heartbreaker to Landers Jacob Miller, a rematch of Hoopes regional semi-finals last weekend. It was another call from the referees that drew the ire of the Star Valley faithful in a very tight match. To wrap things up, Trislers battle at heavyweight with Wheatlands Taylor Bush went to double-overtime as the final point was awarded to Bush on a stalling tactic from the Braves junior. Area snowpacks are pretty much the same as last year for this time of the year, said DeMont Grandy, natural resource specialist. Local snow courses in the Star Valley are all about 90 percent of normal. Current snow packs are above normal in the northwest corner of the state and fall off to 61 percent of normal as you go to the southeast corner of the state. The drought is still alive in many parts of Wyoming. According to Grandy, both the Greys River and Salt River are predicted to flow 97 percent of normal if future precipitation events remain average. Its important to remember that all snow pack percentages are based on the water content in the snow pack, he said. The snow pack depth varies in density percentages from year to year so the only way to compare snow pack percentages from year to year is water content. Former Thayne resident Keith Tindall passed away Dec. 1, 2012 of natural causes. Keith was born in Kansas City, Mo., on March 20, 1915 to Lawrence Tindall and Louvenia Wood. He had one sister, Evelyn, with whom he was very close. Keith grew up in Los Angeles during the Depression and started work at a young age. Through his labor in the orchards he developed a lifelong love of horses. Keith graduated from Beverly High School in 1933. He studied watch-making, then attended UCLA where he met Suzanne Hackett. The couple married in 1935, then moved to Lancaster, Calif., in 1938 where Keith owned and operated a jewelry store. They adopted their three-month old daughter, Judy, in 1942, one month before Keith enlisted in the Navy. He was stationed in Maui, Hawaii, where he serviced airplane instruments. He returned to Lancaster where he worked as a Field Deputy for County Supervisor Warren Dorn. By News Release on Feb 19, 2013 in Alpine, News, Wyoming The Wyoming Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration, in cooperation with the Town of Jackson and Teton County, have been working diligently on developing a Planning and Environmental Linkage study for Wyoming State Highway 22 and Wyoming State Highway 390 in Teton County. The purpose of the study, which considers environmental and community goals in the planning process, is to develop a corridor vision, identify transportation needs, and develop preliminary alternatives for solutions to the transportation challenges in this corridor. WYDOT hosted a stakeholder workshop and public open house in October of 2012 to collect input from local landowners and the general public on the transportation vision and needs of the area. That input is now being utilized by WYDOT to develop and screen alternatives. Ultimately, WYDOT will present a list of implementable transportation projects that meet the needs and vision of the corridor. Working with staff from the town and county, WYDOT is using a multi-level screening process to evaluate alternatives. In the days of constantly updated information via the internet, fans from across Wyoming were constantly refreshing their various electronic devices as the 3A West Regional wrestling tournament in Mountain View came down to the wire. In the end, Derrick Wolfleys victory over Powells Riley Stringer put the Braves in front for good as Colton Trislers title at heavyweight put the icing on the cake. The Braves finished with 265.5 team points, inching past Powells 258.0. Lander finished a distant third with 149.0 I thought it was nice that some of these kids got to avenge some losses,said head coach Eddie Clark. Semadeni got to beat the kid from Powell. Derrick got to redeem himself after the Ron Thon and we felt great about Carbon. He gets down to weight and won. Kris Beech won it. Colton is essentially a first-year wrestler and here he is winning the regional. Nine grapplers advanced to the finals with seven of them winning the regional championship. Five match ups in the finals were head-to-head against Powell with Star Valley winning four of them. Star Valley Medical Center is moving forward with plans to construct a new emergency department and expand its surgery department. The estimated cost of the project is $9 million. In order to help finance the project, the medical center is seeking a tax bond to raise $3.4 million. The tax bond would be paid through an annual three mil property tax levy. According to information provided by Star Valley Medical Center, it will take approximately eight years to retire the bond. This expansion project will meet the new Emergency Department standards of construction and meet patient privacy needs, said Charlie Button, CEO of Star Valley Medical Center. It allows for better trauma treatment and has hazmat emergency capabilities. The expansion project will create better security and a patient and family waiting area, Button said. The expanded facility will also meet standards for psychiatric observation and pediatric patient care. The surgery department expansion will resolve the pre/post operative bottlenecking and overcrowding, Button said. This construction will add one additional operating room and provide better patient privacy and allow for better care in the pre/post operative areas. A few years ago I was lucky enough to attend a conference in the beautiful city of Amsterdam. After getting up my name badge and picking through the obligatory bag of SWAG I spotted a handwritten note with my name on it. On closer inspection the note was from the conference organisers thanking me for attending and giving me a few tips on how I could get the most out of the event.
