Biosimilars Bill Seeks To Notify Patients & Doctors of Changes to Prescriptions

Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2013

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) and BioFlorida commend the Florida Senate Committee on Health Policy for passage of Senate Bill 732 out of committee today. If signed into law, this legislation will ensure doctors are made aware that biosimilar medicines were substituted for interchangeable biologic medicines by a pharmacist.Furthermore, this bill seeks to ensure records of biosimilar substitution are kept for a reasonable amount of time. The policies outlined in Senate Bill 732 align with all five of BIOs principles on biologic substitution. While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) oversees approval of biologic medicines, policies governing whether one product may be substituted in place of a doctor's prescription and whether a pharmacist must notify a consumer are covered by state law. This legislation properly preserves the physician-patient relationship, protects patient access to accurate prescription information, maintains incentives for innovation and promotes a competitive market for biologic therapies. This bill is a model for legislation necessary in all 50 states to address this cutting-edge technology. Biosimilars are not generics. Even slight changes to a biologic drug can change its properties entirely. Unlike conventional generic medicines, biosimilars are not the same as the drugs they seek to substitute. … Continue reading

Medication abuse strategy calls for more surveillance of prescriptions

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2013

Angela Mulholland, CTVNews.ca Published Wednesday, March 27, 2013 7:34AM EDT Last Updated Wednesday, March 27, 2013 11:00PM EDT With Canada battling a growing crisis of prescription drug abuse, the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse has released a 10-year plan aimed at curbing the misuse while also ensuring that those who legitimately need the medications can still access them. The plan is entitled First Do No Harm: Responding to Canada's Prescription Drug Crisis, and is aimed at highlighting whats needed to address the problem of prescription drug abuse. The plan calls for the creation of a countrywide surveillance system that would track how powerful medications are being prescribed. As well, it urges new legislation to allow such surveillance to take place, as well as to prevent doctors and pharmacists from prescribing painkillers indiscriminately. The plan also calls for changes to ensure that prescription medication addicts can get the help they need. The strategy takes aim at the three most troublesome classes of prescription medications: painkillers in the opioids family, such as oxycodone, hydromorphone and fentanyl; stimulants such as amphetamines; and sedatives, such as clonazepam and pentobarbital. Dr. Andrea Fulran, of the University Health Network, said the strategy is a step towards … Continue reading

Ariad Pharma Falls On Weak Leukemia Drug Prescriptions

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2013

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (TheStreet) -- Ariad Pharmaceuticals (ARIA) has been hit with a wave of selling in the past two weeks tied to investor concerns about the commercial launch of the company's leukemia drug Iclusig. The selling has erased all the gains made in the Ariad since the beginning of the year. For the past two weeks, Iclusig scripts have been soft, up 8% for the week ended March 8 and down 17% for the week ended March 15, according to IMS Health. Say what you will about the reliability and meaningfulness of a week's worth of prescription data, but Wall Street follows this stuff closely. A down week in scripts for a drug like Iclusig -- with high sales expectations already baked into Ariad's $3.4 billion market valuation -- raises alarm bells. Ariad shares have closed in the red for eight straight trading days -- a streak that finally appears to be ending Wednesday. Still, Ariad is down 17% during this time period. I spoke with a healthcare investor Wednesday who's short Ariad and believes the stock is still significantly over-valued because Iclusig's peak sales will never match current expectations. On average, analysts are projecting Iclusig sales to grow from … Continue reading
