Babies born hooked on prescriptions

Posted: Published on March 9th, 2013

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - The cry of a baby in withdrawal isn't quite the same as the whimpers mothers are accustomed to when welcoming their bundle of joy. These are shrieks never ending calls for help as these babies withdraw from the narcotics that ran through their bloodstreams for months inside their mothers' wombs. Those yells often become seizures, tremors, sweating battles and high fevers. These sounds aren't caused only by illegal "street drugs" used by the mother, but more often in recent years from prescription medications. And the misuse and abuse of prescription drugs by pregnant women whether intentional or unknowingly is on the rise in East Central Indiana. As far as local child advocates are concerned, the time to do something about this situation is now, The Star Press reported. "This is a problem that certainly isn't going away. Just last week, four of the 14 babies born in the hospital were going through drug withdrawals," said Donna Wilkins, the Delaware County Health Department medical officer and a neonatologist for Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Hospital. "Sometimes I feel like we're never going to stop this, not without the whole community getting involved. This is a problem not … Continue reading

Doctors may delay prescriptions for ear infections

Posted: Published on February 27th, 2013

A new medical guideline could have parents waiting up to three days to receive medication for their childs ear infection. Despite antibiotics and countless doctors visits, many parents have struggled with ineffective treatments. The American Academy of Pediatrics is now recommending a 72-hour observation period prior to prescribing any antibiotics in order to allow the body to fight the infection. If they receive antibiotics often, children may build up resistance to the drugs. As a mom, Abbey Wagner said it would be tough to see her son in pain without doing anything for him. It would be a difficult thing to accept because you just want them to get better, she said. Dr. Elizabeth Walenz said although antibiotics may sometimes be effective, they do not come without side effects. Antibiotics are not risk-free. They can cause diarrhea, diaper rash and allergic reactions in patients, she said. Although the response time may be different in most cases, doctors will work with parents to make a joint decision. Walenz also said that the guidelines do not apply if a child is visibly ill or in lots of pain. Read the rest here: Doctors may delay prescriptions for ear infections … Continue reading

But here's the good news: if moisturizers and cortisone creams aren't giving you relief, help may be shockingly simple. The name Eczema just sounds uncomfortable... and it is. It's not exactly an onomatopoeia, but it's cacaphony tells you it's not something you want. Eczema's most immediate impact is discomfort, whether it's itching or burning or both, and even worse for many people, are the unsightly patches of redness, flaking and even crusting which, when on the face, just don't cover well with makeup. Eczema is often persistent, but when it does go away, just to make matters a little worse, it tends to be recurrent and come back for no apparent reason. While eczema can be anywhere on the body, it's the visual impact of … Continue reading

Not sure about Telemedicine? Think again..... Ask A Doctor Live Not sure about Telemedicine? Think again...... Telemedicine has been growing rapidly because it offers four fundamental benefits: bull; Improved Access -- For over 40 years, telemedicine has been used to bring healthcare services to patients in distant locations. Not only does telemedicine improve access to patients but it also allows physicians and health facilities to expand their reach, beyond their own offices. Given the provider shortages throughout the world--in both rural and urban areas--telemedicine has a unique capacity to increase service to millions of new patients. bull; Cost Efficiencies -- Reducing or containing the cost of healthcare is one of the most important reasons for funding and adopting telehealth technologies. Telemedicine has been shown to reduce the cost of healthcare and increase efficiency through better management of chronic diseases, shared health professional staffing, reduced travel times, and fewer or shorter hospital stays. bull; Improved Quality -- Studies have consistently shown that the quality of healthcare services delivered via telemedicine are as good those given in traditional in-person consulations. In some specialties, particularly in mental health and ICU care, telemedicine delivers a superior product, with greater outcomes and patient satisfaction. bull; … Continue reading

Does Hypnosis for Weight Loss Actually Work? – Video

Does Hypnosis for Weight Loss Actually Work? http://www.involutionweightmanagement.com Does hypnosis for weight loss actually work or is it just wishful thinking on the part of people who don't really want to make sacrifices, change their diets or feel any discomfort. Let's see if hypnosis is an effective therapy for losing those extra pounds. There seem to be three distinct groups of people who consider using hypnosis for weight loss. The first groups we could call the "tourists". They are interested in quick gains with no real work - in fact, they'd prefer it if someone else were responsible for causing them to get in shape. When pressed, they may not be too serious and they don't really want to change any eating habits or exercise. In many ways, it is magical thinking and they're secretly hoping that somehow they will be hypnotized into a faster metabolism, a greater sense of aversion to eating, or that they will suddenly assume the identity of an avid health nut. In reality... that's probably not going to happen. It does require some additional factors in order for a long-term effect. The second group; let's call them the … Continue reading
