Posted: Published on October 11th, 2014

DURHAM, N.C. This heartwarming video shows the moment a North Carolina man blinded for 33 years sees again with a bionic eye. The New York Daily News reported that Larry Hester lost his vision due to retinitis pigmentosa. But a new electronic system can help him see shapes and light. Duke Medicineposted the touching video to YouTube earlier this week. The YouTube description reads: Larry Hester, 66, has been blind for half his life from a condition called retinitis pigmentosa. In September, 2014, an electronic stimulator was surgically implanted in his left eye. On October 1st, 2014 Duke eye surgeon Dr. Paul Hahn turned it on for the first time. While the device does not restore vision in the normal sense, it provides light-and-darkness differentiation. Hes the seventh person in the United States to receive the visual aid since the device, known as the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System, was approved by the FDA. Duke is only the fourth center in the country to implant the device since approval. Were going out there to win the World Cup, said Dean, who has been playing the game since 2003. Obviously youve got India and Pakistan, who are strong teams. They play really hard, challenging cricket but I feel we have got the tools now to deal with that and hopefully we can go all the way. Thats the plan anyway. Eye implant restores 'gift' of vision to blind man

Posted: Published on October 7th, 2014

Blind Raleigh man first in NC to receive vision implant Thirty-three years ago, Larry Hester was diagnosed at the Duke Eye Center with retinitis pigmentosa, which quickly led to profound blindness. Duke eye surgeon Dr. Paul Hahn in September gave Hester a new implant called Second Sight a device inside the eye with an array of electrodes that is attached to a part of the retina that still functions. Hester was given a special pair of glasses with a camera that sends a signal to a small processor, which then sends information wirelessly through the glasses to the implant. On Oct. 1, after a few weeks of healing, the device was turned on. Can you see, Larry? his wife, Jerry, asked after doctors switched it on. Yes, he replied. Oh my goodness, yes. Hester knew what he might see would be high-contrast images bright spots and shapes. Bright objects flash like strobe lights. For now, he only turns it on for about 30 minutes a day. His brain is still adapting to vision that's been dormant for half his life. He will continue to have the Second Sight implant system fine tuned and receive vision training therapy. The device worked … Continue reading

retinitis pigmentosa (pathology) — Encyclopedia Britannica

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2014

retinitis pigmentosa, group of hereditary eye diseases in which progressive degeneration of the retina leads to severe impairment of vision. In the usual course of disease, the light-sensitive structures called rodswhich are the visual receptors used in dim lightare destroyed early on, causing night blindness in youth. Over time, further atrophy of the retina and changes in the layer of supporting cells known as the pigment epithelium occur. Commonly, the field of vision becomes constricted until the affected person sees objects as if looking through a tunnel. In most cases, the course of disease is very slow, and progression to total blindness is uncommon. There are several hereditary patterns for retinitis pigmentosa, and multiple genetic defects responsible for the various forms of disease have been isolated. Treatment is largely supportive and aimed at optimizing remaining vision. There are several types of therapy under development for the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa. Among the most promising of these therapies are retinal implants, which have demonstrated some ability to restore perception of light and dark in several blind patients. A retinal implant consists of an electrode implanted at the back of the eye that receives signals from a transmitter and camera embedded in a … Continue reading
