DEVONPORT Aquatic swimmer Jacob Templeton will this week head to Adelaide for the 2013 Energy Australia Swimming Championships. DEVONPORT Aquatic swimmer Jacob Templeton will this week head to Adelaide for the 2013 Energy Australia Swimming Championships. Jacob has been classified as a multi-class athlete, due to a degenerative eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa. This means that he will swim in the visually impaired S13 class against Australia's best from the recent Paralympics, including world record holder Matthew Cowdrey. With the Devonport Aquatic Centre being reconstructed, Jacob has had to travel from Burnie to Launceston to train. He is also a year 12 student at St Brendan-Shaw College, which means he has had to overcome the difficult task of balancing his study and training loads. Racing in his favoured events _ the 50 metre and 100m freestyle and butterfly, and the 200m individual medley _ Jacob is keen to show his competition that he is up to the challenge. He has done the majority of his training alone and will use this as encouragement and motivation come race day. Olympic stars including James Magnussen and Alicia Coutts will be competing at the championships, as the multi-class events are intertwined with those … Continue reading

Annual Houston 5K VisionWalk aims to raise $120,000 for blindness research

Posted: Published on September 23rd, 2014

In an effort to fund cutting-edge research targeting vision-robbing retinal diseases affecting more than 10 million Americans, the Foundation Fighting Blindness will host its 7th Annual Houston VisionWalk on Saturday, October 4, at Discovery Green Park. The 5K walkathon aims to raise $120,000 for research that will lead to preventions, treatments and cures for diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP), age-related macular degeneration, Usher syndrome and Stargardt disease. These sight-stealing diseases affect people of all races and ethnicities, young and old. "Sight is something you can learn to live without, but, of course, we don't want Brendan to have to miss out on anything," VisionWalk Team Captain Anne Doventry says of her son. "That is why our family decided to participate in Visionwalk. While we know Brendan is going to have an amazing future with or without sight, we want him to have every chance to fulfill his dreams." Doventry is hopeful because the Foundation Fighting Blindness funds many avenues of promising research, including a breakthrough gene therapy which has restored vision in children and young adults in clinical trials. "VisionWalk is an opportunity to take action in support of advancing research and move one step closer to a cure," … Continue reading

QLT Reports Positive Results From Phase 1b Trial With QLT091001

Posted: Published on September 12th, 2014

By RTT News, September 12, 2014, 07:19:00 AM EDT (RTTNews.com) - QLT Inc. ( QLTI ) Friday reported positive data from its Phase 1b retreatment trial with oral synthetic Cis-Retinoid or QLT091001 in patients with Leber Congenital Amaurosis or LCA or Retinitis Pigmentosa or RP. The results showed clinically significant improvements in visual fields with repeated dosing of QLT091001 in both LCA and RP patients with RPE65 or LRAT mutations. There was also a slight positive effect on visual acuity in both patient groups. The Phase 1b retreatment trial was a multicenter, open-label extension study in which LCA or RP patients with RPE65 or LRAT mutations who had been treated with a single course of QLT091001 in the company's previously completed Phase 1b study, received up to three 7-day courses of QLT091001 to evaluate visual outcomes and safety following retreatment.
