It is the first time that allogeneic cells stem cells that come from another person have been used to repair damage to a heart caused by a heart attack STEM CELLS UP CLOSE. This handout picture, released from Japan's Kyoto University Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA) on January 23, 2013 shows part of the renal tubule cells (red part) which were differentiated from human stem cells at the CiRA in Kyoto. File photo from Kyoto University/AFP MADRID, Spain A Spanish hospital has successfully used stem cells culled from healthy donors to treat seven heart attack victims, in what officials said was a world first. Madrid's Gregorio Maranon hospital plans to treat 55 patients in all with the technique in a clinical trial, the regional Madrid government which runs the hospital said in a statement. "Seven patients have already been operated on and they have progressed very well despite havingt suffered serious damage to their heart tissue," it added. Stem cell-grown hair could help those with hair loss

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2015

For the first time, researchers have been able to use pluripotent stem cells to generate cells that can grow new hair. Hair growing on hairless mice thanks to induced pluripotent stem cells. Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute It's been theorised for years, but now human stem cells have resulted in hair growth for the very first time. "We have developed a method using human pluripotent stem cells to create new cells capable of initiating human hair growth. The method is a marked improvement over current methods that rely on transplanting existing hair follicles from one part of the head to another," said Alexey Terskikh, Ph.D., associate professor in the Development, Aging and Regeneration Program at Sanford-Burnham. "Our stem cell method provides an unlimited source of cells from the patient for transplantation and isn't limited by the availability of existing hair follicles." The process started with human pluripotent embryonic stem cells -- that is, stem cells that are capable of developing into any other cell -- which were then developed into neural crest cells. These are cells that can develop into a variety of cells on the head, including brain cells, cartilage, bone and muscle cells. From the neural crest cell point, … Continue reading

Stem Cells Could Treat Hair Loss

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2015

Got too much scalp? A new way to treat hair loss that doesnt involve solutions, creams or hocus-pocus could be on the way. Scientists at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute have developed a stem cell method that initiates human hair growth. Stem Cell Treatment Cures Blindness Stem cells are the baseline, progenitor cells of all cells in our body. Using a genetic technique, Alexey Terskikh, an associate professor at the institute, and his colleagues coaxed stem cells to become dermal papilla cells. These cells regulate the formation and growth cycle of hair follicles. When transplanted into lab mice, the dermal papilla cells promoted the growth of hair. Stem Cells Grow Beating Heart Our next step is to transplant human dermal papilla cells derived from human pluripotent stem cells back into human subjects, said Terskikh. We are currently seeking partnerships to implement this final step. Stem cell register boosted by Taunton event in memory of Margot Martini

Posted: Published on January 28th, 2015

A TOTAL of 275 people became potential life savers by registering on the stem cell donor register in Taunton on Saturday. Becki Robertshaw organised the event, which involved giving a mouth swab, at North Street Church in memory of toddler Margot Martini, from the Midlands, who died of blood cancer last year. Buskers played outside, with face painters and Anna and Elsa from Frozen also appearing, as the incredible response boosted the number of registered donors in Somerset by an amazing 45% and a raffle raised 2,000 for the Delete Blood Cancer charity. Simon, who had a bone marrow transplant 12 weeks ago, took his wife along so she could register. Margots father, Yaser, who drove down from London to attend, said: The Team Margot donor drive in Taunton was a triumph. These are relatively small numbers and what we really need is for the rest of the county and indeed the nation to step up and do something so simple, and yet so meaningful, which can potentially save a life. It's a great start along the longer journey were aiming at getting 4% of the UK population onto the stem cell register, which means we wish to encourage another … Continue reading
