Top Japan lab dismisses ground-breaking stem cell study

Posted: Published on December 26th, 2014

9 hours ago by Kyoko Hasegawa Haruko Obokata, 31, a researcher at Japan's Riken institute, wipes away tears during a press conference in Osaka, western Japan, on April 9, 2014 Japan's top research institute on Friday hammered the final nail in the coffin of what was once billed as a ground-breaking stem cell study, dismissing it as flawed and saying the work could have been fabricated. The revelations come a week after a young researcher at the centre of the scandal, which has rocked the country's scientific establishment, said she would resign after failing to reproduce the successful conversion of an adult cell into a stem cell-like state, known as "STAP" cells. The failure marked a stunning fall from grace for 31-year-old Haruko Obokata, whose co-researcher committed suicide amid the embarrassing scandal that prompted respected science journal Nature to retract an article detailing the research. On Friday the government-backed Riken institute, which sponsored the study, said embryonic stem cells had been added in the process of the research, hammering Obokata's contention that she had found an easier way to generate new stem cells in the lab. "But we can't conclude whether the mixing was done on purpose or by mistake … Continue reading

Brother's transplant holds the gift of life for Densley family

Posted: Published on December 26th, 2014

Hard road: Cooper Densley gets a kiss from mother Olivia as brothers Jackson (left), and Fletcher play around him with father Andrew (right). Photo: Simon O'Dwyer Santa Claus delivered some wonderful gifts to Cooper Densley this year, but none of them compare to one he received from his brother Jackson in October. In a potentially life-saving exchange, Jackson Densley, 2, donated stem cells found in his bone marrow to his older brother Cooper, 4, three months ago. Their parents,Oliviaand AndrewDensley, are hoping the transplant will help cure Cooper of a rare genetic condition he was diagnosed with last year: Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome. The disorder weakens the immune system, leaving sufferers vulnerable to infections, and it reduces the production of platelets - blood cells that keep bleeding under control. Advertisement It means children suchasCooper can get extremely sick from common coughs and colds and a knock to the head while playing sport could trigger fatal bleeding in the brain. The only known treatment is a stem cell transplant which can be derived from bone marrow or umbilical cord blood from a healthy donor whose tissue matches that of the recipient. When those cells are put in to the recipient's bloodstream, they can … Continue reading

Injured man sees improvement after donations get him back to KC

Posted: Published on December 26th, 2014

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) - A former detective and salsa promoter who was seriously injured in Miami is now back home in Kansas City just in time for Christmas. His family is thrilled by his improvements, and grateful for the donations that made Howard Carney's return home possible. Carney landed on Saturday on a private medical flight at Kansas City's downtown airport. Tens of thousands of dollars were needed, and donors made it possible. Howard Carney's sister, Angie, spoke with KCTV5 last month about her desperation to get him home to be surrounded by loved ones. And it's already paying off. Everything is improving for him medically and mentally, Angie Carney said about the past few days. On Oct. 4, a distracted driver rear-ended Howard Carney's motorcycle. His injuries included brain trauma that affects his memory. Doctors in Miami told Angie Carney that her brother's memory would improve more quickly and thoroughly if he were around people he knew. She has seen a difference already in the five days since he has returned. It's good for him to be around people, Angie Carney said. His memory is starting to come back. Among those who've been able to visit every day … Continue reading

Japanese scientist resigns over stem cell scandal

Posted: Published on December 20th, 2014

Dec 19, 2014 The government-backed Riken Institute verification experiment team leader Shinichi Aizawa (right C, standing) tells journalists in Tokyo on December 19, 2014, that a so-called ground breaking study on stem cells cannot be reproduced A researcher embroiled in a fabrication scandal that has rocked Japan's scientific establishment said Friday she would resign after failing to reproduce results of what was once billed as a ground-breaking study on stem cells. Haruko Obokata said she was dismayed that new laboratory tests have not been able to repeat her experiments, which she had claimed showed the successful conversion of an adult cell into a stem cell-like state. "I am keenly aware of my responsibility for troubling a number of people because of my inexperience," Obokata said in a statement. "I even can't find the words for an apology," said Obokata, who has avoided media exposure since her last news conference in April. Her resignation came as Japan's Riken Institute formally announced that so-called "STAP" cells cannot be recreated, apparently drawing a line under the controversial study. "We have conducted verification experiments but can't repeat the STAP phenomenon," team leader Shinichi Aizawa told a nationally broadcast news conference. "As a result, we … Continue reading

Japan lab cannot repeat ground-breaking cell finding: reports

Posted: Published on December 18th, 2014

14 hours ago Some of Japan's top scientists have been unable to reproduce results of what was once billed as a ground-breaking stem cell study, but which spiralled into a scandal that included a respected researcher's suicide, reports said Thursday. The government-backed Riken Institute will announce Friday that so-called "STAP" cells cannot be reproduced, writing the embarrassing final chapter of a study published in the journal Nature but later withdrawn, according to national broadcaster NHK. "Cells with pluripotency could not be created under the method spelled out in the study," NHK said, citing unnamed sources. Riken in January trumpeted how Haruko Obokata, now 31, had devised a simple method to re-programme adult cells to work like stem cellsthe precursors that are capable of developing into any other cell in the human body. The study was top news in Japan, where the photogenic Obokata, a Harvard-trained scientist, became a phenomenon. But media attention soon grew into scepticism as doubts emerged about Obokata's papers on Stimulus-Triggered Acquisition of Pluripotency (STAP). Mistakes were discovered in some data published in two papers, photograph captions were found to be misleading, and the work itself could not be repeated by other scientists. Obokata, who asserted that … Continue reading

Stem cell transplant for acute myeloid leukemia

Posted: Published on December 13th, 2014

The usual doses of chemotherapy drugs can cause serious side effects to quickly dividing tissues such as the bone marrow. Even though higher doses of these drugs might be more effective, they are not given because they could severely damage the bone marrow, which is where new blood cells are formed. This could lead to life-threatening infections, bleeding, and other problems due to low blood cell counts. A stem cell transplant (SCT) allows doctors to use higher doses of chemotherapy (sometimes combined with radiation therapy). After that treatment is finished, the patient receives an infusion of blood-forming stem cells to restore the bone marrow. Blood-forming stem cells used for a transplant are obtained either from the blood (for a peripheral blood stem cell transplant, or PBSCT) or from the bone marrow (for a bone marrow transplant, or BMT). Sometimes stem cells harvested from a babys umbilical cord are used. There are 2 main types of stem cell transplants: allogeneic and autologous. They differ with regard to the source of the blood-forming stem cells. Allogeneic stem cell transplant This is the most common form of SCT used to treat acute leukemia. In an allogeneic transplant, the stem cells come from someone … Continue reading
