Posted: Published on February 26th, 2015

The parents of a two-year-old girl who died of cancer have issued an emotional appeal to get more people to become stem cell donors. Margot Martini tragically lost her battle with leukaemia in October last year. She had previously had a bone marrow transplant in February 2014 after a match was found, but devastatingly, the cancer returned. A new campaign called 'Just One More' has been released by Team Margot and explains the desperate need for more donors in Britain. Her family wrote: "There are more than 37,000 people worldwide who need a bone marrow transplant. "And like Margot, they urgently need your help to find a matching donor. "On average, only half of those seeking a matching donor will ever succeed in finding one. "And only 20% if the patient has an ethnic or mixed family background." Team Margot encourages everyone in good health between the ages of 17 and 55 to register as a stem cell donor, then encourage Just One More person to do the same . Margot's family have also announced that a Team Margot Stem Cell and Bone Marrow Awareness Day will be held on October 7 this year - exactly two years after her … Continue reading

You could be the match and save someone's life

Posted: Published on February 21st, 2015

To what length would you go to save someone's life, a stranger's life at that? It's a question Be The Match group representatives are asking you as every ten minutes someone who has blood cancer dies. We're talking about people diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma and sickle cell anemia. For hundreds of patients each year, their only hope for survival is a bone marrow or stem cell transplant. "My doctors told me, you can go through a transplant or you can die," said John Philpott, Be The Match community engagement representative. "Those were my only choices." Fortunately, for John Philpott who was diagnosed with leukemia in 2012, he eventually heard the words "We found a match." Philpott, like many others, 70 percent, to be exact, do not find a matched donor within their family. After beating cancer, he nabbed a job working for the group that saved his life. "The number one thing that Be The Match does is provide hope patients who have no other choice than to receive a transplant," Philpott said. Friday, Feb. 20 and Saturday, Feb. 21, people can sign up to be a part of the registry. You have to be between the ages of 18-44 … Continue reading

Seattle Genetics Submits Supplemental BLA For Phase 3 AETHERA Trial Of ADCETRIS

Posted: Published on February 18th, 2015

By RTT News, February 18, 2015, 09:15:00 AM EDT (RTTNews.com) - Seattle Genetics Inc. ( SGEN ) announced it has submitted a supplemental Biologics License Application (BLA) to the U.S. FDA based on data from the phase 3 AETHERA trial of ADCETRIS (brentuximab vedotin) as consolidation therapy immediately following an autologous stem cell transplant in Hodgkin lymphoma patients at high risk of relapse. The trial achieved its primary endpoint and demonstrated a significant increase in progression-free survival (PFS) per independent review facility, with a hazard ratio of 0.57 and a p-value of 0.001. Clay Siegall, CEO of Seattle Genetics, said: "Results from the AETHERA trial demonstrated that treating high risk Hodgkin lymphoma patients with ADCETRIS in following autologous stem cell transplant resulted in a statistically significant improvement in progression-free survival with a manageable safety profile. We believe that this is clinically meaningful and supports a label expansion for ADCETRIS in this setting." After being rushed to hospital due to constant pain and fever-like symptoms, Jaso who is a Sri Lankan Tamil - was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in December and faced an uphill battle to find a match on the Anthony Nolan register. His wife Jasmini, who signed up to the register herself, kick-started the Help Save Jaso campaign to recruit more Sri Lankan donors to the register. Following weeks of campaigning to get more Sri Lankan Tamils to sign up, Jaso has defied all odds and found himself a stem cell match. Jasmini said: When the consultant told us they had a match for Jaso it was just amazing news. We were so happy, completely over the moon. The consultant told us how rare it is to find a match for a Sri Lankan so Jaso feels like the luckiest man thats ever lived. "Words cannot … Continue reading
