Andrew Madoff Battling Stage-Four Cancer, Receives Donor Infusion After Stem Cell Transplant

Posted: Published on August 10th, 2013

By Nicole Weisensee Egan 08/09/2013 at 04:15 PM EDT On Wednesday, Madoff received a donor lymphocyte infusion in hopes of salvaging the stem cell transplant he received on May 29th, after several rounds of chemotherapy and radiation to treat his mantle cell lymphoma. "Things were humming along nicely, but then one of the components of the transplant started failing," he says. "We kind of waited it out a couple of weeks to see if it would fail entirely." His situation did not improve, which led to the donor infusion on Tuesday. "This will hopefully prevent it from failing," he says. "If they didn't do this, it would certainly have failed." With doctors saying there is only a 50/50 chance that the infusion will work, Madoff insists he is trying to stay positive. "It's hard. It's been a long road. I've been receiving treatment since January, and it's a lot," he says, ticking off, "Six rounds of chemotherapy, then radiation, then more chemo before the transplant, then the transplant itself." Madoff, whose stage one cancer (confined to a single lymph node), was originally diagnosed in 2003, now has stage four cancer, which has spread throughout his body. He revealed his recurrence … Continue reading

Scientists identify biomarker to predict immune response risk after stem cell transplants

Posted: Published on August 7th, 2013

Public release date: 7-Aug-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Eric Schoch eschoch@iu.edu 317-274-8205 Indiana University INDIANAPOLIS -- Researchers from Indiana University, the University of Michigan, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute have identified and validated a biomarker accessible in blood tests that could be used to predict which stem cell transplant patients are at highest risk for a potentially fatal immune response called graft-versus-host disease. Although transplant specialists have been able to reduce its impact, graft-versus-host disease remains a leading cause of death among patients who receive a stem cell transplant from another person, known as an allogeneic transplant. Such transplants are used to treat blood and bone marrow cancers such as leukemia and multiple myeloma, often as a last resort. Graft-versus-host disease occurs when immune cells from the transplant see the patient's body as foreign and attack it. Approximately 20,000 allogeneic stem cell transplants were performed worldwide in 2012. Thirty to 40 percent of stem cell transplant recipients whose donor is related will experience graft-versus-host disease. The percentage could rise to 60 to 80 percent if the patient and donor are not related. The researchers found that patients with a high level … Continue reading

Stem cell transplant will give Katy teen a new lease on life

Posted: Published on August 1st, 2013

For as long as she can remember, Katy teenager Gabby Neely-Smith has had to deal with pain. She suffers from Kostmanns neutropenia, a rare, congenital disease where the body makes too few white blood cells. The 18-year-old has to take daily injections of Neupogen to help her body produce the types of white blood cells that fight infection. Its up to Gabbys mother, Jill Neely-Smith, to give her the daily injections either in her arm or stomach. Gabby feels pain when she gets the shot, pain for a few minutes after the shot and severe bone pain thereafter. Ive never had a day without pain, said Gabby, matter-of-factly. You get used to it, and its not too bad as long as I take the Neupogen. In what can only be described as a cruel irony, the Neupogen that helps Gabby battle infection is also the culprit behind her recent positive test for the mutated gene that is a precursor for leukemia one of the possible side effects of the medicine. Her doctors at MD Anderson Cancer Center recommended that she receive a bone marrow transplant also known as a stem cell transplant to protect her from developing leukemia. She begins … Continue reading

Argentine boy heads home after stem cell transplant at Duke

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2013

Durham, N.C. Almost a year ago, when 11-year-old Lautaro Javier left Argentina for medical treatment at Duke University Hospital, his parents didn't know where they would stay or how they would get by in Durham. They felt very much alone. "Like a fish out of water," said Lautaro's father, Eduardo Javier. But they went to the Ronald McDonald House, where they were made to feel comfortable and protected, he said. On Sunday, after 347 days, the Javiers will return home. "This week, it was very hard for us because we had to say goodbye to everybody at the transplant ward, all the nurses, everybody," said Gabriela Veronica de Pablo, Lautaro's mother. "It was very hard to say goodbye." Lautaro has a rare disease called metachromatic leukodystrophy, which causes an enzyme deficiency in his brain. "That leads to damage in the brain and progressive brain disease, which is usually the cause of death," said Dr. Vinod Prasad with Duke's pediatric bone marrow and stem cell transplant program. A stem cell transplant and therapy helped him improve in many areas he can speak more with his family and is able to spend more time on his feet, with assistance. Back home, celebrities … Continue reading
