Recipe For Poor Wound Healing: Bacterial Infection Plus Stress

Posted: Published on May 13th, 2014

Finding may lead to novel stem cell treatments for chronic wounds (SACRAMENTO, Calif.) - The stress hormone epinephrine - the source of the "fight-or-flight" response - also heightens stresses at the cellular level, inhibiting wound healing and promoting a state of chronic inflammation that prohibits the body's stem cells from migrating to a wound to encourage skin regeneration, UC Davis researchers have found. The research, published in the April issue of the scientific journal Stem Cells Translational Medicine, is the first to show that epinephrine cross-activates other cellular pathways that feed off each other, generating inflammatory proteins in an exaggerated response that impedes wound healing. The research has important implications for the development of new treatments for chronic nonhealing wounds, conditions that affect more than 5 million Americans. "We have discovered that the pathways activated by the 'fight-or-flight' hormone epinephrine and those activated by the presence of bacteria in wounds communicate with one another synergistically, greatly promoting inflammation," said Mohan R. Dasu, lead author of the study and an associate researcher in the UC Davis Department of Dermatology. "The combination of stress and infection is a recipe for chronic infection." Chronic infections are a major global health problem, with annual … Continue reading

For thousands of years physicians had 3 ways to treat patients; with surgery, drugs, and medical devices. These were considered the 3 pillars of medicine and society has benefited from major advances in these areas. Today, a 4th pillar of medicine, cellular based therapies or regenerative medicine is likely to dominate medical therapies in the future. Regenerative medicine uses the bodys own cells to treat diseases, repair damage, and restore structure and function. We understand what it means to seek a good healthy quality of life and our doctors are focused on making positive differences in the lives of patients through innovative stem cell treatments and regenerative medicine treatments. And it just so happens that you came equipped with stem cells, The Human Repair Kit and we know how to put it to work. A 150-Year History of Autologous Treatments in Western Medicine There has not been a more powerful method in existence of healing the body than by using its own biology and chemistry. Skin grafting, which is the use of skin or a skin substitute to replace a non-healing wound, has been in existence since 800 BC. One of the earliest documented cases of attempted skin grafting occurred … Continue reading

Cedars-Sinai researchers identify how heart stem cells orchestrate regeneration

Posted: Published on May 7th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 6-May-2014 Contact: Sally Stewart sally.stewart@cshs.org 310-248-6566 Cedars-Sinai Medical Center LOS ANGELES (EMBARGOED UNTIL NOON ET ON MAY 6, 2014) Investigators at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute whose previous research showed that cardiac stem cell therapy reduces scarring and regenerates healthy tissue after a heart attack in humans have identified components of those stem cells responsible for the beneficial effects. In a series of laboratory and lab animal studies, Heart Institute researchers found that exosomes, tiny membrane-enclosed "bubbles" involved in cell-to-cell communication, convey messages that reduce cell death, promote growth of new heart muscle cells and encourage the development of healthy blood vessels. "Exosomes were first described in the mid-1980s, but we only now are beginning to appreciate their potential as therapeutic agents. We have found that exosomes and the cargo they contain are crucial mediators of stem cell-based heart regeneration, and we believe this might lead to an even more refined therapy using the 'active ingredient' instead of the entire stem cell," said Eduardo Marbn, MD, PhD, director of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute and a pioneer in developing investigational cardiac stem cell treatments. "The concept of exosome therapy is interesting because it could potentially shift our strategy from … Continue reading

Community helps Gilbert boy with Cerebral Palsy

Posted: Published on April 11th, 2014

GILBERT, AZ - Seven-year-old Andrew Burkhart can now run like other kids his age, due to stem cell treatments and donations from strangers. Kellie Burkhart says her son was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy when he was 4 years old. Cerebral palsy is a brain and nervous system disorder, which can cause motor disability in a child. He was tongue-tied at birth pretty significantly, said Burkhart. His tongue was connected up front, so that was the first really obvious. Burkhart says Andrew didnt talk until he was 3 years old. He also suffered severe gastrointestinal issues. At 4 years old he weighed 50 pounds and still was in diapers. Traditional methods werent working so Kelli turned to a doctor in California. The doctor said we should do bone marrow from Andrews own hip. So he, the doctor, processed Andrews stem cells and then put it back into him through an IV, said Burkhart. It was like Gods hand touched him and turned on a switch. His GI system was fixed and within a week, he was potty trained within a month, said Burkhart. Insurance companies consider the stem cell therapy out of pocket. Each summer the family spends around $28,000 for … Continue reading
