Why Food Network Star Sunny Anderson Can't Eat Vegetables

Posted: Published on October 24th, 2014

There's a reason why Sunny Anderson isn't keen on eating vegetables -- and it has nothing to do with personal taste. The Food Network star revealed that for the past 20 years, she's suffered from ulcerative colitis -- a chronic disease that affects the large intestine and doesn't allow her body to absorb nutrients as it should. Unfortunately, greens, along with vegetable and fruit skins, can trigger flare-ups. "I cant just have a big salad because my body doesn't break it down," she explained to ABC News. "If you get my cookbook, there are only four vegetable recipes. Everything else is meat and potatoes!" Anderson, 39, has since teamed up with the the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America to raise awareness of the disease and develop recipes (available on getyourfullcourse.com) to help others who have it. For the chef, her diagnosis came at age 19, after suffering from cramps "worse than that time of the month" and bloody stools for a month. "I was thinking it was stress or the food [I'd been eating in Korea]... but luckily my dad is a doctor and I felt comfortable talking to him," she said. "Sometimes people think it's something they ate … Continue reading

Added benefit of vedolizumab is not proven

Posted: Published on October 24th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 23-Oct-2014 Contact: Dr. Anna-Sabine Ernst presse@iqwig.de 49-022-135-6850 Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care Vedolizumab (trade name Entyvio) has been approved since May 2014 for patients with moderately to severely active Crohn disease or ulcerative colitis. In an early benefit assessment pursuant to the Act on the Reform of the Market for Medicinal Products (AMNOG), the German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) examined whether the drug offers an added benefit over the appropriate comparator therapy in these patient groups. According to the findings, such an added benefit is not proven because the dossier contained no suitable data for any of the two therapeutic indications. G-BA specified adalimumab or infliximab as comparator therapy Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis are chronic inflammatory bowel diseases. Vedolizumab is an option when conventional therapy is not tolerated or does not provide sufficient release of symptoms. This conventional treatment can also be a tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF) antagonist. The Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) specified a TNF antagonist (adalimumab or infliximab) as appropriate comparator therapy for both therapeutic indications. It is to be noted that it is possible to switch to a different TNF antagonist or to adjust … Continue reading

Sleep duration affects risk for ulcerative colitis

Posted: Published on October 22nd, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 21-Oct-2014 Contact: Rachel Steigerwald media@gastro.org 301-272-1603 American Gastroenterological Association @AmerGastroAssn Bethesda, MD (Oct. 21, 2014) If you are not getting the recommended seven-to-eight hours of sleep each night, you may be at increased risk of developing ulcerative colitis, according to a new study1 in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the official clinical practice journal of the American Gastroenterological Association. "Both short and long durations of sleep have important health implications and are associated with increased overall mortality, cardiovascular disease and cancer," said lead study author Ashwin N. Ananthakrishnan, MD, MPH, Massachusetts General Hospital. "Our findings indicate that ulcerative colitis may potentially be added to this list. We found that less than six hours of sleep per day and more than nine hours of sleep per day are each associated with an increased risk of ulcerative colitis." Researchers conducted a prospective study of women who were enrolled in the Nurses' Health Study (NHS) I since 1976 and NHS II since 1989 and followed through detailed biennial questionnaires with greater than 90 percent follow-up. The large size of the cohorts, prospective design and prolonged duration of follow-up provide a unique opportunity to examine the association between sleep duration and incident … Continue reading
