NUSAJAYA: Eight-year-old cerebral palsy patient Mok Swee Yeng has always wanted to walk and run around like a normal child but her movements were restricted by her condition since she was two.

She could only rely on her grandmother, who takes care of her daily and carries her everywhere, to go to the bathroom and move around.

But Swee Yengs dreams would soon come true as she underwent orthopaedic surgery sponsored by Columbia Asia Hospital here recently to tune the muscles around her knees to enable her to walk normally.

Two consultant orthopaedic surgeons and two consultant anaesthetics successfully conducted the 90-minute procedure.

Swee Yengs mother Wong Poi Poi, 25, said she heaved a sigh of relieve after seeing her daughter being wheeled out of the operating theatre.

When she gained conscious, she kept crying in pain and I feel my heart breaking and could not help but cry with her.

But at the same time I am glad that she will be able to run around like a normal child soon, she said.

Swee Yengs grandmother Lee Choy Kheng, 57, who takes care of Swee Yeng by herself while Wong works in Kuala Lumpur as a make-up artist, said she massaged Swee Yengs legs whenever she can and helps her do light exercises.

This is great news for us because I worry that one day I might get too old and weak to carry her around. I cannot wait to see her stand on her own two feet soon, she said.

Lee added that once Swee Yeng, who enjoys singing and watching television, recovers, she promised her to visit Legoland Malaysia theme park together.
