ROSS COUNTY, Ohio A Chillicothe man has been charged with animal cruelty after police say he fatally injured a puppy for barking.

The Ross County Humane Society says the organization and Ross County Dog Warden were contacted by the Town and Country Animal Clinic about the reported abuse of a 13-week-old male puppy.

According to a police report, Joshua Keets of Chillicothe responded to the puppy barking on Wednesday morning by throwing him out of the window of the residence, slamming him into the ground and then throwing a crate containing the puppy against a wooden fence.

After receiving the puppy, the Ross County Humane Society decided to send him to Northfork Animal Clinic and then MedVet Hospital in Worthington due to needed emergency medical care.

The puppy was suffering from fluid in the lungs as a result of the traumatic brain injury and passed away due to the extent of his injuries.

The humane society says Keets was charged with animal cruelty. Another person living at the residence where the alleged abuse occurred, Belinda Hufferd, was also charged with animal cruelty for failure to seek medical treatment for the puppy. There were more puppies at the residence which were seized by the Ross County Dog Wardens office.

I would like to thank Town and Country Animal Clinic, the Chillicothe Police Department, the Ross County Dog Warden office, Northfork Animal Clinic, and MedVet for their efforts and attempts to save this puppy and for working together to file charges as necessary, said Ross County Humane Society Executive Director Jenn Thomas in a statement.

We hope justice will be served in due course. I would also like to thank the public for the donations received for his emergency care after we posted him on Facebook. We could not provide adequate emergency care for dogs in these situations without the support of our community.

The humane society said it would provide updates if more charges were filed in the case.
