Tulsa, OK (PRWEB) November 11, 2012

Paralysis, hepatitis, thyroid problems and vital organ damage are just some of the Yervoy side effects that could injure melanoma patients, according to Yervoy manufacturer, Bristol-Meyers Squibb, which cites the side effects in their Risk Evaluation on the U.S. Food and Drug Administrations website.

In 2011, the FDA approved Yervoy (ipilimumab), a medication for treating patients with metastatic, or late-stage, melanomathe most deadly type of skin cancer. The FDAs website includes a Risk Evaluation statement from Yervoy manufacturer, Bristol-Meyers Squibb, in which a long list of potential ipilimumab side-effects is cited.

The most serious Yervoy health risks are a tear in the intestinal wall, also known as gastrointestinal perforation, hepatitis due to liver damage, paralysis from nerve damage and inflamed pancreas, kidneys, lungs and heart. The document lists other less severe but life-altering Yervoy risks, including thyroid, adrenal and pituitary gland problems, blurred vision, motor and sensory problems, and changes in mood, sex drive and mental performance.

According to the National Cancer Institute, there will be more than 9,000 melanoma deaths in 2012 in this country. For patients suffering metastatic disease such as advanced skin cancer, the 5-year survival rate ranges from below 10 percent to approximately 20 percent, depending on where the melanoma has spread in the body.

Dangerous drug attorney Dirani, of Tulsa, OK Hansen Dirani & Associates Law Offices, said he appreciates the appeal of a drug that can lengthen the life of a terminally ill patient, but cautions that skin cancer patients need to weigh the risks of ipilimumab carefully. Since several Yervoy side effects can be fatal in and of themselves, or may severely reduce a persons quality of life, the decision to treat melanoma with ipilimumab is a difficult one, said Dirani. Melanoma patients should discuss all the options with their physician and may wish to consult with a Yervoy attorney to discuss any recalls or further warnings about that and any other skin cancer dangerous drugs.

Ipilimumab attorney Hansen Dirani adds that anyone with Yervoy health problems can arrange a free consultation with a Yervoy lawyer by calling 877-583-0700 or visiting http://www.callhansen.com.
