Dr. Randall Benson will present on the latest techniques in neuroimaging at the North American Brain Injury Societys (NABISs) 25th Annual Conference on Legal Issues in Brain Injury, September 13-15, in Miami, FL.

Dr. Benson is nationally recognized for his research into traumatic brain injury (TBI). In 2010, Benson testified before the U.S. Congress Judiciary Committee on his research into neuroimaging of retired National Football League (NFL) players. Earlier this week, the NFL announced it had granted $30 million to the National Institutes of Health for medical research. The announcement followed research that suggests NFL players are at higher risk of death from brain disorder than the general population.

Dr. Benson holds a dual fellowship in behavioral neurology and functional neuroimaging from Massachusetts General Hospital. He received his residency training in neurology at the Boston University School of Medicine. A board-certified neurologist and medical director at the Center for Neurological Studies (CNS), he has authored or co-authored numerous research articles in juried publications, has spoken on the topic of brain injury/disorder around the world, and has been and is involved in significant research projects.

At the NABIS conference, Dr. Bensons presentation will focus on the role of advanced MRI methods, including diffusion tensor (DTI) and susceptibility-weighted (SWI) to objectify mild to moderate brain injury. "Mild traumatic brain injury is controversial and may be difficult to distinguish from psychological disorders, such as post traumatic stress disorder, said Dr. Benson. More specialized MRI sequences such as SWI and DTI are often able to detect the small hemorrhages and axonal injury that usually may occur with mild injuries, which allows clinicians to distinguish between organic neurologic and non-organic etiologies. Furthermore, in most cases, good correlations can be found between symptoms, neurocognitive deficits and imaging findings, which has implications for diagnosis, treatment and forensics."

NABISs principal mission is to move brain injury science into practice, whether in the areas of clinical care, research, policy or litigation. The organization supports this mission through scientific updates, communication exchange and educational programs like the 25th Annual Conference on Legal Issues in Brain Injury. This is a great honor for Dr. Benson and his years of research, said CNS Executive Director, John D. Russell. It proves that, under Dr. Bensons leadership, CNS is using cutting edge diagnostic techniques and advancing understanding of brain injury at the national level.

CNS was founded in 2011 with the objective of advancing scientific research for neurovascular disease. With locations in Dearborn and Novi, MI, CNS hosts patients from around the world who seek an accurate diagnosis from advanced neuroimaging techniques, especially in the case of mild to moderate traumatic brain injury. For more information on CNS, reach Dr. Benson or John D. Russell, Executive Director, at (248) 277-3334.

NOTE TO EDITORS: Dr. Benson is available for interviews on brain injuries and brain-related diseases. Topics may include concussions in sports, help for caregivers of loved ones suffering brain disease and concussions among combat veterans. To arrange an interview, reach Dr. Benson at (248) 277-3334.
