DrugRisk Update: Yaz Lawsuits Spread to Europe As Settlements Continue in U.S.

The patient advocates at DrugRisk.com are alerting patients taking the birth control drugs Yaz or Yasmin of new information on the site showing patient claims over alleged blood clots from the drugs has now spread as far as Europe, as settlements continue in the United States.

The resource center contains warnings from experts like the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, who stated that birth control pills containing drospirenone, such as Yaz and Yasmin, may have a higher risk of causing blood clots.*

DrugRisk has also learned that thousands of patients in the U.S. have filed a Yaz lawsuit over blood clots. These have been consolidated to a special federal Multi-District Litigation court in Illinois. The formal case is known as Yasmin and Yaz (Drospirenone) Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation (MDL No. 2100, Southern District Illinois).

Now, new information added to the site shows two young women in Switzerland and France have filed claims against Bayer over blood clots, prompting Frances Health Ministry to cancel reimbursements for the drugs and Switzerlands largest health insurer to join in the claim for damages.**

DrugRisk has reported that Bayers most recent financial statements show the company has spent up to $750 million so far to settle around 3,500 Yaz claims, at an average of nearly $214,000 per case.*** Bayer confirmed they are only settling claims involving blood clot injuries, such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
