Police surrounded a pharmacy in Edinburgh's Royal Mile in an armed stand-off with a man and woman.

The pair - who were believed to be wielding weapons - caused a disturbance that saw a large section of the famous stretch of road sealed off.

Officers later led the male suspect out of the Royal Mile Pharmacy in handcuffs as the siege came to an end. Paramedics were then seen entering the building, before a woman was taken out on a stretcher.

A spokesman for Police Scotland had earlier said: "We are currently in attendance at a business where a male and female are causing a disturbance inside.

"The male and female are believed to be in possession of a bladed weapon and officers are in the process of getting them out of the building."

Eyewitness Mayte Fernaudez, 27, who lives on the Royal Mile, said she saw a man lock himself inside with four or five other people.

"I saw one man in the pharmacy lock the door," she said.

"The police couldn't get in. I think the man was in his late 20s or early 30s.There were four or five other people in the pharmacy. I think there was one lady and more people inside."
