The Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles has partnered with Loma Linda University Medical Center to host the Epilepsy Community Forum at the Wong Kerlee Conference Center on the Loma Linda University campus on Sunday, June 30, 2013 in Loma Linda, CA.

From 10:30 am to 3:00 pm, the Forum will cover a wide-array of topics pertinent to the epilepsy community. Parents of children may benefit from the presentation Growing with Epilepsy: Cognitive and Behavioral Disturbances as they work to respond to their childs needs. People of any age living with epilepsy will be interested in the topic on New Horizons in Treatment of Epilepsy: Update on Medications and Surgical Options. To delve further into treatments, the Forum will also highlight Dietary Treatments in Epilepsy. The inherent theme of the Forum empowering the community through education is most apparent with the closing session, when Ann Kinkor, the State Advocacy Coordinator for Epilepsy California, and Susan Pietsch-Escueta, the Executive Director of the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles, join together to present on Advocating in the School and Healthcare Arenas. With the exception of the closing session, all sessions are facilitated by physicians from Loma Linda University Medical Center.

Dr. Travis Losey, the Medical Director of Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology, expressed his gratitude in being able to partner in events like the Epilepsy Community Forum where we can spend more to time provide important updates about epilepsy to the local community. It is also an added bonus that individuals and family members have the opportunity to meet and learn from each other by attending events, like the Forum.

Affirming the partnership, Susan Pietsch-Escueta shared that the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles welcomes opportunities to partner with key medical centers in our region where specialists are involved in the care of families affected by epilepsy. So, we were thrilled when Dr. Losey and the Loma Linda University Medical Center suggested we partner to organize an Epilepsy Community Forum for families in the Inland Empire.

The days activities include the UCB-sponsored Epilepsy Advocate seminar, Take Charge Tour, which is being held from 8:30 to 10:00 am as a satellite seminar before the Forum begins. A childrens program for kids with epilepsy and their siblings will take place throughout the duration of the days activities, thanks in part to Studio E: Epilepsy Art Therapy Program sponsored in part by Lundbeck. We also acknowledge support from UCB The Epilepsy Company, funding from the Epilepsy Foundation and the Health Resources and Services Administration / Maternal and Child Health Bureau under award number U23MC19824; and, partial support from Raising Hope for Epilepsy Polo Benefit 2013.

ABOUT EPILEPSY Without warning, seizures can happen to anyone at any age. When a person has two or more unprovoked seizures, they have epilepsy. Seizures do not all look the same and, according to the International League Against Epilepsy, there are currently more than 25 different recognized epilepsy syndromes affecting almost 3 million people in the U.S. and about 65 million people worldwide. Someone is diagnosed with epilepsy every four minutes and, this year alone, almost 200,000 people in our country will be diagnosed. To date, there are no known cures.
