RCMP have arrested a 38 year-old woman accused of stealing prescription drugs from a pharmacy in Cornwall, P.E.I. while she was an employee there.

Phyllis Shirlene Curtis of Kensington has been charged with theft over $5,000 as well as two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking and two counts of trafficking a schedule one substance under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Management at Murphy's Pharmacy alerted RCMP after noticing a breach in internal procedures surrounding inventory of narcotics over the past several months. Curtis was a pharmacy technician during the alleged incidents.

RCMP believe Curtis is responsible for the theft and illegal distribution of more than 7,000 prescription narcotics in the last several months.

In a news release, RCMP say the arrest is a significant step in removing prescription drugs from the streets of Prince Edward Island.

Curtis is scheduled to appear in provincial court in Charlottetown on July 22.
