20-01-2012 04:21 http://www.telethon.it - A Telethon researcher for many years, Giulio Cossu is the director of the Regenerative Medicine Unit at the San Raffaele Institute in Milan and a professor of Histology at Milan University. After training to become a doctor, he then chose research, also spending many years abroad. He has always studied muscular dystrophies and is preparing treatment for Duchenne muscular dystrophy based on the use of certain stem cells present in the blood called mesoangioblasts. The first clinical trials on human beings for this innovative stem cell treatment will begin in 2011. Giulio Cossu's project entitled "Mesoangioblast transplantation for Duchenne muscular dystrophy: stage I clinical trials" is funded by Telethon-UILDM.
