PARK HILLS Family and friends gathered on Tuesday, May 21 to offer congratulations to 11 Pharmacy Technician Training Program graduates at Mineral Area College. Students completed the 12-week training consisting of classroom study and three clinical rotations at local hospitals and pharmacy retail stores. Curriculum includes the most commonly used drugs, review of pharmacy laws and ethics, practice calculations, inventory management, compounding, standards of care and customer service.

The graduates included Scott Kubala, Farmington; Allen Baranovic, Bonne Terre; Monica Page, Farmington; Chris Stringham, Park Hills; Tina Donze, Irondale; Courtney Wurst, Fredericktown; Danielle Magura, Bonne Terre; Katie Ikemeier, Farmington; Bailey Weber, Ste. Genevieve; Ashley Ikemeier, Farmington; Laurel Bohn, Fredericktown.

The local health care employer partners that serve as clinical sites are Mineral Area Regional Medical Center, Parkland Health Center, Pharmax Pharmacy, Parkland Health Mart Pharmacy, Prescription Plus, Austin Plaza Pharmacy, Great Mines Health Center, SEMO Quality Care, Walgreens and Washington County Memorial.

Jennifer Majeske serves as the training program instructor. Majeske is a Certified Pharmacy Technician through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) since 2000, registered pharmacy technician in the state of Missouri and the Pharmacy Technician Educators Council (PTCE). She is a member of National Pharmacy Technician Association (NPTA), Advocate Educator through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Educator Program and the Pharmacy Technician Educators Council. Majeske brings 10 years of retail and hospital pharmacy experience to the classroom. She started a similar pharmacy technician training program in Virginia.

Alison Sheets, program support specialist for the MoHealthWINs Grant programs on campus, said she and Majeske had looked forward to the graduation and reception. Its great to see the students celebrating their achievement with family and friends. Not only do we recognize the students hard work but we also get to recognize the students support team, she said. Many students have small children or part-time jobs in addition to juggling the three full days spent in the classroom and two days at their assigned clinical site.

A Department of Labor grant, titled MoHealthWINs, has allowed MAC to implement two new programs on campus to address the current and future workforce needs in the health services industry. Local unemployed, underemployed, low-skilled individuals, veterans and those people who have lost their jobs as a result of their jobs moving overseas may be eligible for short term job training at no tuition cost.

To determine if an interested student meets the MoHealthWINs grant eligibility requirements, call Alison Sheets, MOHealthWINs program support specialist at Mineral Area College. Applications for the health service programs are available at http://www.MineralArea.edu/MoHealthWINs or call (573) 518-3820. Interested participants may also apply at the Park Hills Career Center, located on Parkway Drive in Park Hills; Supportive services may also be available to qualified applicants.
