Menopause and Women Menopause is the transition in a woman's life, generally between the ages of 40 and 55, when production of estrogen and progesterone decline to the point that ovulation and menstruation stop. Perimenopause is the 2 to 10 year period prior to menopause where the production of estrogen and progesterone fluctuates, producing symptoms similar to those associated with menopause, except that ovulation and menstruation do not completely cease.
