Brought to market in 2001, NuvaRing is a hormonal contraceptive device that releases a combination of etonogestrel, a synthetic progestin, and the estrogen, ethinyl estradiol. The small, flexible ring is designed to be inserted into the vagina once a month, and is kept in place for three weeks. Since its launch on the market, a number of studies have found an association between NuvaRing and serious side effects, including blood clots, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and strokes. For example, research released by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011 showed that women who used NuvaRing faced a 56% increased risk of having a serious blood clot compared to those using older birth control pills. Last June, a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that women who used combined hormonal devices, such as NuvaRing, were 2.5 to 3 times more likely to experience strokes compared to women who used other types of hormonal birth control. A study published a month earlier in the British Medical Journal found the likelihood of NuvaRing users experiencing a dangerous blood clot was 90% higher than it was for women taking combined oral contraceptives containing levonorgestrel.
