As it stands Side Effects is Steven Soderberghs last film, and if it is going to stay that way I have to say it truly is one hell of a way to bow out. As we all know, this year in the UK we have seen some truly great films, but the majority of films released here so far have all been released last year in the US, and it comes as no surprise to hear that many critics are regarding Side Effects as one of 2013s best films so far.

Whilst watching the film I really felt that Soderbergh wanted to leave a lasting impression on Hollywood, as no one would ever want to retire without leaving a mark, and he has done exactly that, as I would hail this film as one of his best.

Arguably despite the fantastic direction and brilliant script, the thing that holds Side Effects together is the acting. The film does boast an impressive cast, for example the likes of Catherine-Zeta Jones and Channing Tatum make an appearance, but as good as the two are, the two stand-out performances in this film come courtesy of Rooney Mara and Jude Law.

To put it simply the acting in this film is phenomenal; almost everything about it just works. Its the type of film where youll be sitting there continuously trying to guess what will happen next, and whilst I enjoyed many twists that the film offered, my only complaint really was the main twist that occurs towards the end of the movie.

I dont want to sound like I didnt appreciate what the script-writers were trying to do, as I still was quite shocked by the ending, its just that I felt a bit underwhelmed, as what this film does so well is that it continuously gets better. The longer the film goes on, the more I became compelled and when your venturing upwards for ninety minutes, to go back down again is rather upsetting, nevertheless its not that I despised the ending, its just that didnt like it that much, but of course thats not to say it spoilt the film, as this really is a very innovative thriller.

Never before do I recall seeing a film like this. As I said earlier, you never quite know what to expect and it really does get you thinking about what doctors and psychiatrists subscribe their patients. Honestly it actually made me quite paranoid, and when a film has an impact on you like that, then you know youre watching something special.
