Jhapa, September 29

More than 500 jailbirds have been infected with eczema at Jhapa District Prison in Bhadrapur.

Itching has grown into an epidemic among inmates for the past few days. The jail is crammed with more than 1,100 jailbirds. The disease has been seen in more than half the number of jailbirds. Health workers say that majority of the jailbirds have been infected with eczema on their private parts and other body parts.

Senior AHW Baldev Sah of the prison said they had provided medicine and ointment to more than 500 inmates, but the disease was yet to come under control. When ointment is applied, the disease comes under control. But, the itching resumes after the impact of the ointment fades away, Sah said.

Jailer Rajendra Niraula said that they had brought a dermatologist to conduct health check-up of patients and provide them medicine, but the disease did not come under control. Some 50 to 60 jailbirds fall ill due to the heat in the prison on a daily basis. A vehicle has been arranged to ferry patients to a health facility.
